This Academic Advisor role is responsible for providing academic advising to undergraduate students in the Opus College of Engineering. The Academic Advisor builds community and belonging for undergraduate students within the college and supports student retention, persistence and success to graduation. This role is a resource to students with questions regarding careers, majors, and campus resources, and provides guidance to students requiring specialized feedback. This role works closely with students, other academic advisors, faculty, and staff to ensure student success and retention within the college. Duties and Responsibilities 1. Provide academic advising to assigned advisees (pre-professional and undergraduate) as well as other students who seek the services of the Advising Center. Maintain appropriate advising notes in the appropriate portal. Academic advising duties include: a. Discussing transition issues including differences between high school and college as well as teaching various time management, test taking and other study strategies. Make appropriate referrals to centers on campus to improve study habits. Communicate the value of a Marquette University Jesuit education and review college course expectations. b. Assist students in exploring careers and majors by providing curriculum information and graduation requirements. c. Provide comprehensive advising by connecting students with various campus resources and assisting students with academic and personal concerns. d. Assist students through course selection and registration questions and train them to use the appropriate systems necessary to register. Review all student schedules and contact students regarding any potential scheduling concerns. e. Contacting students with academic deadlines and dates. f. Work with various populations including RWAR, probation, advanced standing transfer students, and prospective students by providing specialized review, feedback and support. 2. Coordinate student success programs and activities in the College. Some examples include the Engineering Tutoring Program and the Engineering Living Learning Community (LLC). 3. Represent the University at Marquette events, including SPARK (new student orientation). Lead SPARK presentations, meetings and advising sessions with students and parents. 4. Responsible for the supervision of student employees which includes but is not limited to hiring, training, disciplinary actions, ending the student's assignment, etc. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Requires a Bachelor's degree in appropriate discipline. Minimum of three years of academic advising or related experience. Ability to work in a high volume, fast paced, deadline-oriented environment. Ability to discern student needs. Ability to work together as a team and interact effectively with students as well as faculty, administrators and staff. Excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to deal with diverse constituencies. Keep abreast of changes in the Marquette Core Curriculum, college major and minor requirements. Demonstrated attention to detail, professional attitude, and ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to work together as a team and interact effectively with students as well as faculty, administrators and staff. Flexibility to work extended and evening/weekend hours is periodically required. Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Background in Engineering. Experience in academic advising in a post-secondary institution. Familiarity with academic support programs.
