Responsibilities
  • Academic Advising and Student Engagement (50%)
    • Serve as the primary advisor for a caseload of undergraduate students, meeting with advisees at least three times per semester (averaging 10 appointments per day, 30 minutes each).
    • Deliver accurate and holistic academic advising, including course selection, registration support, graduation planning, and referrals to campus resources.
    • Maintain detailed and timely records of advising sessions using Navigate360, ensuring documentation reflects student goals, concerns, and follow-up plans.
    • Provide advising support during Bear Necessities New Student Orientation and other university onboarding initiatives.
  • Student Success Planning and Retention Strategies (20%)
    • Monitor assigned students for early alerts, mid-term performance, and registration barriers, intervening with timely support and outreach.
    • Develop at least one innovative success plan each semester for underperforming or at-risk students (e.g., Drop List, financial clearance concerns).
    • Use institutional data to identify trends in persistence and develop data-informed action steps that remove barriers to student progression.
  • Leadership and Training (15%)
    • Assist in training new Retention Advisors and student workers on academic advising processes, student engagement techniques, and technology tools.
    • Lead or co-lead special projects or advising campaigns in coordination with the Assistant Director for Academic Advising and other team members.
    • Share promising practices and insights to improve the units overall advising impact.
  • Collaboration and Communication (10%)
    • Maintain professional and timely communication with students, academic leadership, and campus partners to ensure alignment on curriculum and policy changes.
    • Serve as a liaison to one or more departments within assigned Career Clusters, attending departmental meetings and relaying relevant student advising trends.
  • Innovation and Continuous Improvement (5%)
    • Participate in or lead pilot projects and student success initiatives designed to improve advising processes or retention outcomes.
    • Proactively seek opportunities for professional development and contribute to team learning.

The Retention Coordinator exercises independent judgment in routine academic advising and student outreach, referring complex situations to the Assistant Director or Senior Retention Coordinator as needed. Decisions affect student course progression, degree completion, and retention outcomes. Errors or missed interventions may result in delayed graduation, loss of financial aid eligibility, or attrition; thus, accuracy, responsiveness, and ethical advising are essential.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelors degree from an accredited institution
  • Experience: At least 1 year of experience in academic advising, student success, or a related field
Skills and Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Navigate360, Banner, or other student information systems
  • Experience advising first- and second-year college students
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and written communication skills
