Fuel Handling Supervisor IIDuration: Through 10/18/2026, with potential for extension based on performance and team needs. Location: Olive Township, MI 49460 # of Openings: 2 Position Summary: The Fuel Handling Supervisor II will be responsible for the planning, organization, and supervision of the Fuel Handling Department operations at CMS Energy. The incumbent will manage the safe and efficient handling of coal, including receiving rail cars, unloading, and ensuring a steady supply of coal to plant boilers through a complex conveyor system. The role also involves overseeing the maintenance of bottom ash ponds, fly ash silos, and ash landfills, ensuring compliance with all environmental regulations and safety standards. This position involves significant leadership, operational management, and technical oversight in maintaining fuel handling equipment and processes critical to plant operations. Key Responsibilities:Supervision & Leadership:
  • Directly supervise a team in the operation of fuel handling and landfill equipment, ensuring safety and operational efficiency.
  • Lead the team in adherence to safety regulations, including corporate safety policies, MIOSHA, and OSHA standards.
  • Conduct safety briefings, oversee personal protection procedures, and ensure housekeeping meets combustible dust standards.
  • Manage grievance procedures and safety/disciplinary investigations, providing necessary corrective actions.
Fuel Handling & Operations:
  • Oversee the receipt and unloading of coal from rail cars and its delivery to boilers via conveyor systems.
  • Supervise the coal train deliveries, switching procedures, and quality control to ensure continuous fuel supply.
  • Manage the placement and handling of spray dry absorber (SDA) by-products.
  • Oversee the management and maintenance of ash storage facilities (bottom ash ponds, fly ash silos, and ash landfills).
Maintenance & Compliance:
  • Implement monthly maintenance plans, handle emergent repairs, and ensure equipment integrity.
  • Supervise fleet vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • Ensure strict adherence to environmental regulations, corporate policies, and all applicable standards.
Financial & Process Improvement:
  • Monitor departmental metrics, budgets, and financials, identifying and executing cost-saving measures.
  • Lead waste elimination and automation projects to improve operational efficiency.
  • Participate in daily, weekly, and monthly operating reviews and continuous improvement events.
Employee Development:
  • Oversee training schedules, time sheet approvals, and employee performance management.
  • Ensure ongoing education and development of union employees, focusing on technical skills, safety, and compliance.
  • Execute and track the distribution of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and ensure adherence to safety protocols.
Required Qualifications:Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree in a Scientific or Technical field (Required).
Experience:
  • 2-4 years of experience with conveyors and industrial equipment handling, preferably in a power plant or similar industrial environment.
  • Technical experience in power plant operations, gained through formal education or relevant work experience (Required).
Skills & Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of fuel handling systems and related equipment.
  • Broad knowledge of safety regulations, including MIOSHA and OSHA standards.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and team management skills.
  • Basic understanding of Lean thinking, first-time quality, and waste elimination/automation methods.
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to present information clearly and engage with both internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to adhere to union contracts and manage labor-related issues.

  • The role requires the ability to adhere to corporate safety guidelines and leadership acumen to manage diverse teams.
