The Role The Director of Maintenance at FreshDirect is the driving force behind the reliability, safety, and performance of our cutting-edge Bronx facility. This leader ensures every system-from refrigeration to high-tension electrical-is running at peak performance so we can deliver fresh, high-quality food to thousands of customers daily. This role is ideal for a hands-on, forward-thinking maintenance leader who thrives in a complex environment and loves turning technical challenges into operational wins. You'll combine technical expertise with strategic oversight, while building and inspiring a team that takes pride in keeping one of the most advanced food distribution facilities in the country running flawlessly. What You'll DoFacility & Systems Oversight
  • Lead the total plant maintenance program, driving best practices in preventive and predictive maintenance to maximize uptime and efficiency.
  • Oversee and provide expert guidance on all major facility systems, including:
    • Industrial HVAC and climate control
    • Cascade 507 and CO2 refrigeration systems
    • Pneumatics and compressed air systems
    • High-pressure boilers and steam infrastructure
    • High-tension electrical systems and power distribution
    • Plumbing, fixtures, and water systems
    • General carpentry and structural maintenance
    • Fire Alarm Control Panel and Sprinklers
  • Maintain optimal inventory levels of critical spare parts and consumables, ensuring we're always prepared for the unexpected.
Process & Compliance Management
  • Champion the use of our CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) for streamlined scheduling, accurate tracking, and data-driven decision-making.
  • Monitor trends, analyze reports, and implement improvements to extend asset lifecycle and minimize downtime.
  • Keep safety and compliance at the forefront by updating SOPs, enforcing strict safety protocols, and ensuring adherence to OSHA standards.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives that balance cost-efficiency with sustainability and performance.
People & Cross-Functional Leadership
  • Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing maintenance team, ensuring technicians are trained, supported, and empowered to succeed.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, ownership, and pride in craftsmanship.
  • Partner closely with operations, engineering, safety, and quality assurance to align maintenance activities with business goals.
  • Conduct regular evaluations and create opportunities for professional growth through technical training and development.
What You Bring
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline (or equivalent combination of education and hands-on experience).
  • 5+ years of experience in maintenance management, including direct oversight of complex systems.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience in a maintenance or facilities environment.
  • Strong bilingual communication skills (English & Spanish preferred).
  • Proven ability to balance technical expertise with strategic leadership.
