Salary : $55,619.20 - $72,300.80 Annually Location : Jacksonville, NC Job Type: Full-Time Job Number: Inspector August 2025 Department: PLANNING Opening Date: 08/13/2025 Closing Date: Continuous Job Description Performs intermediate technical and administrative work participating in the enforcement of the North Carolina State Building Codes primarily involving residential structures, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the general direction of the Planning and Development Deputy Director.   • Plans, coordinates and participates in building, electrical, mechanical, fire, and plumbing plan review and inspection activities primarily related to residential structures
  • Coordinates plan review and inspection activities with architects, contractors and citizens
  • Issues stop orders on unauthorized building activities
  • Receives, investigates, and takes action on complaints and suspected code violations
  • Maintains records and files
  • Prepares a variety of reports and correspondence on inspection matters
  • Performs assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member, if appointed or volunteers
  • Performs related tasks as required
Qualifications Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical inspection primarily related to residential structures; thorough knowledge of building, construction, engineering and structural engineering principles and practices; ability to operate standard office equipment including a personal computer and applicable office productivity software; ability to plan, direct and coordinate the various phases of inspection services; ability to present facts and recommendations effectively in oral and written form; firmness and tact in enforcing building codes; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, government officials and the general public. Education, Experience, and Special Requirements High school diploma or GED with coursework in in building concepts, or related field and considerable experience electrical, building, mechanical,or plumbing construction or inspections, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Requirements: Possession of North Carolina Level I Standard Certificates in all trades - electrical, plumbing, mechanical, building, and fire or the ability to obtain Level I Standard Certificates in all trades within the first 30 months of employment. Valid driver's license. Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget and market considerations. North Carolina Local Governmental Employees' Retirement System Eligible employees are automatically enrolled in the retirement system and must contribute 6% of their gross salary each pay period. Once eligibility requirements are met, employees will be able to receive monthly payments for life based on their salary, age, and years of service credit. NC401k The County contributes 1% of employees' gross salary into the 401(k) account regardless of the employee's deferral amount. In addition, the County matches employee deferrals up to an additional 4%. Vacation Leave Regular full-time employees earn 13.5 days of vacation leave per year. With each 5-year increment of employment, vacation accrual increases. Sick Leave Regular full-time employees earn 12 days of sick leave per year. Paid Holidays County employees receive paid holidays annually. The Board of County Commissioners approves and may adjust the schedule as deemed necessary. Teladoc Mental Health Services The County provides Teladoc Mental Health Services to help employees and their families with personal, family and job-related problems such as depression, and substance abuse concerns.
