Unit Overview
- Department: Adolescent Psych CPEP
- # Beds: 45 total, divided into sections
- Fast Track/Triage: No designated fast track or triage section
- Average Patients/Day: 15–45 patients
- Security: Available in-house 24/7 (housed in the ER)
Staffing
- RN-to-Patient Ratio: 1:6–12 (varies by acuity)
- Typical RN Staffing (Total 8 RNs):
- 2 Triage RNs
- 4 RNs (Adult patients)
- 1 RN (Pediatrics/Adolescents)
- 1 Charge RN (no assignment)
- Other Staff:
- PCTs Duties: Phlebotomy, 12-Lead EKGs, 1:1s, transport, ADLs, contraband searches, property inventory, assist with care
- RT (Respiratory Therapy): Available 24/7; handles ABGs, breathing treatments, intubation (if needed, pt is transferred out)
- Physician Coverage:
- Days: 3 Psych Physicians
- Nights: 1 Psych Physician + 1 Psych Resident
- Each shift: 1 Medical Physician (Shift: 8 AM–8 PM)
Certifications Required
- Mandatory: BLS, ACLS, PALS
- Preferred: CPI (will train if not certified)
Patient Population
- Common Diagnoses:
- Severe mental illnesses & behavioral issues (e.g., schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, MDD, anxiety, trauma)
- Often with comorbidities
- Note: Medically unstable patients are transferred out
Experience Requirements
- Minimum: 1 year of psych nursing
- Preferred: Some medical unit experience (MS, Tele, PCU, ICU)
- Other Notes:
- ED experience not required
- Prefer experience with de-escalation and use of leather restraints
- Will accept first-time travelers
Medications & Procedures
- Med Admin: PO and IM (no IVs)
- Common Meds: Psychotropics (e.g., Haldol, Zyprexa, Ativan)
- Telemetry:
- Not used routinely
- RNs expected to recognize life-threatening rhythms (used during codes)
- Lab Work: Drawn by PCTs
- Imaging (X-Ray/CT): Available in main ER; PCTs handle transport
Scheduling
- Shift: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM or 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday Requirement: May participate in holiday rotation
- Call: None
- Floating: May float to inpatient psych units
- Scrub Color: Royal Blue
- Scheduling Notes:
- Schedule based on unit needs
- RTOs considered
- Perm staff can trade shifts with travelers
Orientation
- 3 Weeks Total:
- 1 Week classroom
- 1 Week inpatient units
- 1 Week assigned unit
