Medtronic's North Haven, Connecticut facility is renowned as a key hub for the Surgical Innovations (SI) business within the Medical Surgical portfolio. It specializes in the development and manufacturing of advanced surgical devices used in minimally invasive procedures, including surgical staplers, sutures, specialty needles, energy-based tools, and soft tissue repair technologies. These devices support general, bariatric, colorectal, thoracic, and robotic-assisted surgeries, helping to improve patient outcomes and reduce recovery times.

Known for its manufacturing excellence, innovation in laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery, and commitment to quality, the North Haven site plays a critical role in advancing global surgical care while contributing to sustainability and the local economy.

R&D Engineering Director - Wound Management - Surgical

As the R&D Engineering Director - Wound Management - Surgical, you will manage a team of approximately 16 to 20 employees (engineers, scientists and technicians of all levels) who are focused on tactical, operational and strategic activities within the Wound Management/Sutures area. This leadership role oversees a department comprising multiple teams, primarily focusing on the R&D area of responsibility. The position emphasizes managing performance, fostering talent development, promoting engagement and inclusion, and communicating business and operational updates. It drives strategic project execution aligned with company objectives, with decision-making authority impacting financial performance, employees, and public image. A key aspect of the role is managing people, including mentoring, coaching, and guiding staff to meet and exceed performance expectations and defined objectives. Responsibilities include setting performance goals, conducting reviews, holding 1:1s, and ensuring alignment with departmental priorities and strategic initiatives. The role fosters innovation, builds strategic relationships with key stakeholders, communicates with senior leadership, and influences cross-functional collaboration while addressing complex challenges through detailed analysis.

A focus on new products development projects' execution is required; knowledge of good project management practices is desired.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Plans, directs and implements all aspects of the Wound Management design and development of new medical device products (sutures).
  • May develop, evaluate, implement and maintain technical quality assurance and control systems or reliability systems and standards pertaining to materials, techniques, or company products.
  • Oversee the investigation and evaluation of existing technologies relevant to the portfolio of products.
  • Guides the conceptualization of new methodologies, materials, machines, processes or products.
  • Directs the development of new concepts from initial design to market release.
  • Manages feasibility studies of the design to determine if capable of functioning as intended. Deep knowledge of good engineering practices is a must; Good knowledge of DRM practices is a plus.
  • Monitors documentation maintenance throughout all phases of research and development.
  • Organizes the coordination of activities with outside suppliers and consultants to ensure timely delivery.
  • Selects, develops and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function.
Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Technical Science is required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant R&D and Engineering experience in medical device with 7+ years of managerial experience, or an advanced degree with a minimum of 8 years of relevant R&D and Engineering experience in medical device with 7+ years of managerial experience.
  • This position is on-site, 4+ days/week in North Haven, CT.
Nice to Have
  • Experience in Medical, Pharmaceutical or highly regulated product industry.
  • DMAIC Lean / Six Sigma Certification.
  • Good knowledge of DRM practices.
  • Mastery of chemistry/polymers/sutures is a plus.
  • Project Management experience / PMP certification.
  • Proven strategic acumen is appreciated.
  • Additional experience in manufacturing functions is helpful.
  • Strong leadership, change management, and transformation skills.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and talent management skills.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD): $194,400.00 - $291,600.00. This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP) and an annual long-term incentive plan. The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
