Overview

Hi Marley is hiring a Principal Data Engineer to serve as the technical lead as we expand our data engineering capabilities. In this hands-on leadership role, you'll guide the short- and long-term evolution of our data systems—enhancing the infrastructure that powers internal analytics and customer-facing intelligence. You'll collaborate across product, engineering, and analytics teams to ensure data is structured, secure, and ready to support our continued growth. As an early technical leader, you'll build scalable pipelines, platform capabilities, and infrastructure that enable trusted insights. You'll also help shape how engineering and analytics collaborate and guide the evolution of the broader data organization. This is a chance to define how data powers Hi Marley's products, insights, and decision-making—delivering performance, compliance, and lasting business impact.

What You'll Do

Platform & Infrastructure

  • Lead Data Platform Strategy and Architecture – Define and deliver a data platform roadmap that supports near-term needs and long-term scale, enabling insights, innovation, and customer value across our products and analytics ecosystem.
  • Design and Build Scalable Data Infrastructure in AWS – Build robust systems within an AWS environment to ingest, transform, store, and serve data across multi-tenant and single-tenant use cases, balancing flexibility, security, and performance.
  • Deliver Trusted Data Pipelines – Develop reliable and observable pipelines using modern batch and near real-time approaches, connecting internal and external data sources.
  • Champion Data Trust and Visibility – Advance practices in data quality, observability, and governance, ensuring systems are secure, compliant, auditable, and built to meet customer and regulatory expectations.

Enablement & Collaboration

  • Partner to Enable Insights – Work with analytics and product teams to deliver structured, reliable data pipelines that support dashboards, customer-facing analytics, and research, providing a trusted foundation for downstream insights.

Leadership & Growth

  • Mentor and Influence Engineering Culture – Provide guidance, share knowledge, and lead by example to establish best practices and grow the data engineering function.
  • Shape a Scalable Future – Partner with cross-functional leaders to define and evolve a data platform roadmap that grows with customers, products, and teams.
What We're Looking For
  • Data Engineering Expertise – 7+ years of experience building reliable, performant data systems, including data modeling, ETL/ELT pipelines, and warehouse optimization.
  • Scaled Platform Leadership – Experience growing data infrastructure through stages of scale, maturing internal systems, guiding platform modernization, or supporting enterprise-level requirements in growth.
  • Deep Experience with AWS – Proven track record designing, building, and operating data systems in AWS (e.g., Redshift, S3, Glue, Lambda, IAM) and optimizing performance, security, and cost in cloud architectures.
  • Proficiency with Modern Tools – Comfortable with SQL and Python (or similar), and hands-on experience with tools like dbt, Airflow, Redshift, Snowflake, or other cloud data platforms.
  • Trust, Security & Governance Focus – Experience designing systems with built-in privacy, access controls, and governance. Familiarity with secure data handling, regulatory compliance, and data classification in multi-tenant or regulated environments.
  • Collaborative and Strategic Mindset – Ability to work across product, engineering, and analytics teams to shape systems that deliver long-term value.
  • Customer-Facing Data Enablement – Bonus: Experience designing backend systems that power customer-facing analytics or data-driven product features.
  • Supportive Leadership Style – A mentoring mindset and enthusiasm for helping others grow while building a collaborative, inclusive culture.
