Aquatics Recreation Specialist positions coordinate, implement, monitor, and evaluate department-wide aquatic and volunteer programs; assist in the development and implementation of youth and adult fitness and recreational programs and activities at pools; recruit, supervise, and evaluate staff, interns and volunteers; schedule and coordinate, staff and volunteer assignments; advertise and promote City-wide aquatic and volunteer programs; plan, coordinate and implement the training of aquatics and volunteer supervisory staff; conduct department-wide on-site inspections of staff and programs; maintain liaison with schools, the public, community organizations, recreation councils, and other interested groups; budget, order, and distribute aquatic supplies and volunteer incentives; and perform other duties as assigned.

NOTE:

    Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).

You must meet the following requirements on the date you apply, unless otherwise indicated.

EDUCATION:Bachelors Degree or equivalent education (i.e., minimum completed units = 120 semester/180 quarter).

NOTE:

    Additional qualifying recreation program experience in aquatics may be substituted for education lacked on a year-for-year basis. One year of full-time experience = 30 semester/45 quarter college level units.

EXPERIENCE:One year of full-time experience developing, planning, and implementing aquatic recreation programs.

NOTE:
    City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.

LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License is required at the time of hire.

HIGHLY DESIRABLE:

  • Possession of a valid American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor Certificate; First Aid for Public Safety Personnel Instructor (Title 22) Certificate; and/or Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Trainer Certificate.
  • Experience promoting and assisting in the administration of an organized volunteer program.
  • Computer experience utilizing web-based software programs.
