This posting represents three (3) Transportation Worker III positions located in the Wilkes County Maintenance unit. Position numbers 60022095, 60022149, and 60022162 will be filled from this posting. You only need to apply once to be considered for all three (3) positions.This posting is for Positions 60022095, 60022149, and 60022162 for a Transportation Worker III in the Wilkes County Maintenance unit. Employee must be able to supervise and train others in equipment operations as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew. Work includes setting up work zones, installing traffic control devices, repairing asphalt pavements, clearing right of way debris and hazards, assisting with pipe installation and operating a variety of hand and power tools. Work also includes the operation of various equipment as needed on different crews that includes, but is not limited to, asphalt maintainer, asphalt patch truck, tandem dump truck, crack sealing machine, rollers, sweepers, skid steer, and backhoe. Work involves shoveling, raking, sweeping, walking and standing for long periods of time. Employee in this position will be exposed to all types of weather conditions; and steep and uneven terrain. This position responds to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, traffic control cleanup, etc. during normal business hours or during emergency call back situations and scheduled night work. May require work during nontraditional work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. This position is also subject to out-of-town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. May perform a variety of other duties, as assigned.* Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices.* Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching.* Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew.* Experience in snow and ice removal operations.* Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper.Additional Expectations:Employee in this position must have working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by Supervisor. Ability to withstand extreme weather and terrain conditions while performing duties. Employee must have ability to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. Ability to work in close proximity of high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Safety toe shoes are required. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.Some state job postings say you can qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience.
