Salary Range: Hourly $15.48

As a Visitor Information Assistant you will:

  • Must be available to work at various locations and varied hours; average 16 hours per week during off peak season (Nov to March) and up to 24 hours during peak season (April to October) or as needed. Must be flexible to work weekdays, mostly weekends, occasional evenings, and holidays.
  • Visitor Information Center (2100 Parks Avenue)
    • 8am to 5pm, Mon. Fri.; 8am to 4pm Sat. & Sun.
  • Chesapeake Bay Center at First Landing State Park (Shore Drive)
    • 8am to 5pm, Mon. Fri.; 8am to 4pm Sat. & Sun.
    • 9am to 5:30pm, daily (summer schedule mid-June through Labor Day weekend)
  • Oceanfront Outdoor Kiosk (17th Street/Boardwalk)
    • 8:30am to 5pm, daily (Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend)
  • VB Convention Center/ VB Sports Center/ Various Hotels
  • Peak Season Events: schedule is based on group needs; weekdays, weekends, occasional evenings.
    • Mobile Visitors Centers, Coastal VA Region and/or other VA cities.
  • Off Peak and Peak Season Events: schedule is based on group needs; weekdays, weekends, occasional evenings.
  • Answer telephone calls from parties requesting visitor information and record names, addresses, and related information to ensure an accurate and proper response to these requests; answer Public Information telephone requests to maintain the City's public information services daily.
  • Respond to email inquiries from parties requesting promotional literature and questions pertaining to accommodations, attractions, restaurants, events, and other tourism-related activities.
  • Keep track of visitor walk-ins, phone calls, email inquiries and mail/shipments using the program Simpleview.
  • Perform duties at the Visitor Information Center and in the Mobile Visitors Centers including but not limited to driving the van, using the onboard computer and internet stations, tracking visitor walk-ups, keeping inventory and restocking inventory, updating Excel spreadsheets, and providing excellent customer service.
  • Have working knowledge of the usage of the mobile kiosk stations to include set-up, dismantling, connection to the internet, be able to troubleshoot software issues, and be able to explain general use of the software program to walk-up visitors.
  • Sort mail requests for visitor information to ensure proper processing and return of information requested.
  • Type, compile, and mail large quantities of promotional literature in response to tourist inquiries to ensure an appropriate and timely response to potential visitors.
  • Assist visitors with information on accommodations, attractions, restaurants, historical landmarks, events, and recreational facilities so that visitors will be aware of the variety of facilities and activities available in Virginia Beach and Coastal Virginia.
  • Maintain knowledge of local and Coastal Virginia attractions, hotels, restaurants, historical landmarks, events, and recreational facilities to ensure that accurate information is transmitted to the public.
  • Organize, order, and place brochures in display rack system in visitor center and mobile visitor centers to ensure updated material is available to the public.
  • Assist in compiling and editing information for the annual vacation guide and other promotional literature (attraction brochure, accommodation guide, etc.) printed by the department.
  • Assist visitors with complaints involving the tourist related businesses in Virginia Beach in an effort to maintain and resolve concerns expressed by the public in regard to the City's tourist industry.
  • Perform other job duties requiring skills, computer knowledge; complete various projects as assigned, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on their current workloads and department needs.
