Job Description :

A.T. Still University (ATSU) is seeking an exempt, full-time Controller of Accounting Operations for the Kirksville, Missouri campus. This position reports to the Assistant Chief Financial Officer and leads core accounting operations across a complex, multi-campus, not-for-profit graduate health sciences university. Oversight includes accounts payable, receivable, procurement, general ledger, grants, endowments, investments, life annuities, gift income, clinic accounting, fixed assets, daily investment and cash management, and institutional tax compliance.

This role supervises a team of accounting professionals and collaborates with university leadership to ensure sound financial operations and compliance with GAAP. The Controller supports the annual external financial audit through detailed reconciliations, audit schedules, and technical guidance.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead daily accounting functions including AP, AR, GL, procurement, fixed assets, grants, investments, gift income, endowments, and cash management.
  • Ensure timely and accurate monthly closings and reconciliations.
  • Oversee compliance with donor restrictions, grant terms, and investment policies.
  • Supervise a team of 4 direct and 8 indirect reports.
  • Maintain and improve internal controls, policies, and procedures.
  • Coordinate with external auditors, preparing audit schedules and documentation.
  • Partner with clinics, advancement, and grants administration on restricted funds and investments.
  • Ensure compliance with state and local tax regulations, including property, sales/use, and non-employee compensation filings.
  • Support financial systems implementation and reporting tools.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field.
  • At least 7 years of progressive fund accounting experience in higher education or a complex nonprofit.
  • Supervisory experience in accounting or finance.
  • Experience with grant, endowment, and investment accounting, including compliance and reconciliation.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, fund accounting, and audit processes.
  • Understanding of federal regulations, compliance, and grant management.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Accounting or related field (may substitute for 2 years of experience).
  • CPA or CMA certification.
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics GP or similar ERP systems.
  • Knowledge of healthcare-related accounting and clinic revenue cycles.
