Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation from an accredited college required, Master's Degree preferred.
  • Requires 2 - 3 years of experience and a comprehensive knowledge of department and facility policies, procedures and operations in order to provide activities and direct Activities staff, volunteers, visitors, residents' family, etc.
  • Requires the ability to use power and hand tools (e.g. band saw, sewing machine, screw drivers, wood and leather tools, etc.), safe handling of toxic substances (e.g. cleaning solutions, varnish, solvents, etc.) and operation of appliances normally used in the home (stove, washer and dryer, iron, etc.).
  • Must be able to complete job duties in a self-directed manner and to coordinate the schedules and activities of several volunteers and Activities Staff to accomplish priorities with a heavy workload and wide variety of work responsibilities.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to deal with a variety of residents and their families, facility and department personnel at all levels, visitors, volunteers and the general public. Should also possess a working knowledge of group dynamics.
  • Must possess thorough knowledge of OBRA and JCAHO rules and regulations.
  • The Activity Director/Staff must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the residents served on his/her assigned unit. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the resident's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each resident's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit/department's policies and procedures.

Summary:

Plans and evaluates the effectiveness of activity programs and associated components of the overall therapeutic environment. This involves ongoing review of appropriate professional literature, modifying programs and methods according to current/professional trends and requirements of JCAHO and MDCIS. Assesses resident's physical, cognitive, and emotional abilities/limitations. Assures that appropriate Minimum Data Sets and RAI are completed in a timely manner. Interviews, recommends the hiring, evaluates, counsels, utilizes disciplinary action including recommendation of dismissal of Activity Department personnel and assists subordinates with difficult resident problems.
