BLS, NIHSS, Valley Medical Center CEUs for Units Requiring NIHSS RN compact license
π General Information
- Unit Type: General Surgery (with some Ortho Spine exposure during orientation)
- Bed Count: 38 (can flex up to 42 with semi-private rooms)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4β5 (both day and night)
- Dress Code: Royal Blue scrubs

Requirements
- Certifications: BLS, NIHSS (Required)
- Experience: Minimum 2 years of RN experience
- Background Restrictions:
- Do NOT submit travelers with license hits involving:
- Diverting medications
- Patient endangerment
- These will result in immediate contract cancellation

- Common Diagnoses:
- Appendectomies
- Fractures
- GI issues
- GYN cases
- Vascular patients
- General surgical cases
π Clinical Info
- Drips:
- Heparin per protocol (set rate)
- No drip titration required
- Telemetry:
- Monitor techs present
- RNs not required to read strips, but must recognize/respond to lethal rhythms
- RT Equipment: CPAP, Nasal Cannula
π₯ Staffing Support
- Charge Nurse: Available and not part of staffing
- Patient Care Assistants (PCAs):
- Ratio: 1 PCA per 8β15 patients (varies with staffing)
- All PCAs are trained in phlebotomy
β° Schedule & Expectations
- Shift Times: 7aβ7p or 7pβ7a
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday Requirement: None
- Call/Standby:
- No call
- May be put on standby if not needed during a scheduled shift
π Floating
- Travelers are first to float
- May float to:
- Other surgical or med-surg units
- Rarely to Covid Medical unit (for team nursing)
- Emergency Department (ED) to assist with med-surg holds
- Note: ED houses ~20β30 med-surg patients daily
π Orientation
- Total Duration: 3 days
- Day 1: General facility orientation
- Day 2: General Surgery Unit
- Day 3: Ortho Spine Unit
