Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse with specialized expertise in post-operative colorectal and urologic surgical care. This role focuses on managing complex surgical patients requiring specialized wound, ostomy, and continence care in an academic medical center environment. The ideal candidate will be proficient in managing post-operative complications and collaborating with wound care specialists.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

  • Licensure: Active Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Experience:
    • 1 year of recent experience at a 600+ bed academic hospital (requires passing competency testing)
    • 2 years of recent med-surg experience (no testing required)
  • Technical Skills: Epic electronic medical record system experience is REQUIRED.
  • Competency: Must complete a mandatory competency test within 48 hours of submission if only 1 year of experience.
  • Travel Policy: No local candidates within the facility's defined ineligible counties.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to post-operative colorectal and urologic surgery patients.
  • Collaborate closely with Wound Ostomy and Continence (WOC) Nurses for complex ostomy care, wound management, and continence needs.
  • Manage patients with TPN (total parenteral nutrition), NG tubes, central lines, and complex drainage systems.
  • Monitor for post-operative complications and implement appropriate interventions.
  • Provide patient and family education on ostomy care, wound management, and post-operative recovery.
  • Administer medications and manage pain control for post-surgical patients.
  • Coordinate care with surgeons, wound care specialists, and the multidisciplinary team.

  • Patient Population: Post-operative patients who have undergone colorectal surgery (colectomy, colostomy, ileostomy, bowel resections) and urologic procedures.
  • Clinical Focus: Ostomy care, complex wound management, TPN administration, drain management, and post-operative recovery.
  • Care Environment: Academic medical center with specialized surgical unit and dedicated wound care support.
  • Typical Conditions: Post-operative bowel surgery, ostomies (colostomies/ileostomies), surgical wounds, fistulas, and related complications.
  • Technology: Wound vacuum systems, ostomy supplies, TPN administration, central line care, and enteral feeding systems.
  • Specialized Care: Strong emphasis on wound and ostomy management with WOC nurse collaboration.
  • Dress Code: Navy blue scrubs required
