Under the general direction of the Supervising Mineral Resources Engineer, the Associate Oil and Gas Engineer independently performs detailed and challenging engineering and geologic work related to mineral, petroleum, geothermal operations, and permitting. Performs well performance, well work, mechanical integrity, and well maintenance evaluations of oil, gas, and geothermal fields. Analyzes Long Beach Unit operations and facility projects. Conducts analysis and prepares technical and complex reports and recommendations regarding advanced economic, engineering, geologic, facility, and operational aspects of state resource leases. Conducts on-site surveillance and witnesses well activities and spill drills. This position is required to have a valid CA driver's license and drive a vehicle on official State business. The successful candidate may initially be required to be in the office at a greater frequency than the mandatory 2 days per week for onboarding and training purposes. Note: Posted salaries do not reflect the 2 - 4.62% pay reduction in exchange for 3.5 - 8 hours per month of leave arising from the Personal Leave Program 2025. - This position may be eligible for hybrid telework under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria set forth in the State Lands Commission policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position's designated headquarters location, as indicated on their duty statement, at their own expense.
- Some review and surveillance is conducted in the field including but not limited to offshore platforms, remote onshore natural gas locations, geothermal regions of the state, and onshore coastal sites.
- Work inside and outside in varying temperatures as needed.
- Willingness to travel by ocean vessel, helicopter, or state road vehicle to access different facilities or oilfield and geothermal sites for on-site field inspections.
- Must be able to pass H2S training and wear self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
- Must be able to pass swing rope test and be swing rope certified.
- Occasional work after hours if necessary, for construction activities that are conducted 24-hours a day.
- Operate a state or approved vehicle, on-road or off-road, to travel to sites on official state business; must have valid California driver's license.
- Field activities are conducted 24 hours a day; must be available to work after hours if necessary.
