Overview

As a Safety Manager you will oversee and manage all safety-related activities at the District. Develop, implement, and maintain safety programs, policies, and procedures to ensure a safe work environment for District employees. Responsible for compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, and promoting a safety-first culture throughout the organization.

Essential Functions:

  • Foster a culture of safety at the District. • Drive safety goals and objectives and integrate safety in all aspects of District operations.
  • Manages the development and constant updating of MSD's Safety Program and Health & Safety Manual.
  • Reviews, researches and implements new standards and policies. • Manage, design/update and deliver safety training programs for all employees.
  • Conduct safety audits, inspections and risk assessments of District facilities, job sites and operations, identifying hazards. Recommend and implement risk control measures to mitigate identified hazards.
  • Investigate accidents, injuries and near-misses, conduct root cause analysis to determine underlying causes and prevent recurrence.
  • Develop and maintain statistical safety reports.
  • Conducts and/or coordinates industrial hygiene surveys including noise and air monitoring.
  • Develop, maintain and implement emergency response plans and procedures, including necessary training.
  • Lead and coordinate emergency drills to ensure staff readiness.
  • Actively manage Senior Safety Coordinators and Safety Coordinators.

Additional Responsibilities:

Perform related duties as assigned by the manager to support departmental needs. This position may require occasional work outside standard hours in response to operational needs. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Responsibilities

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Training & Experience:

  • Bachelor degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Safety, Safety Management, Risk Management or a related field
  • 8 years of safety management experience in the construction or industrial sectors
  • 4 years of experience in a supervisory or leadership role within safety or risk management
  • Must possess a valid driver's license
  • Must have safe work and driving habits

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Knowledge of safety related local, state and federal regulations
  • Skill in developing,enhancing and implementing safety programs
  • Skill in performing incident investigations, root cause analysis, risk assessment and emergency response planning
  • Strong oral and written communicaton skills
  • Effective communicator with the ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to identify safety hazards and recommend solutions
  • Ability to train, advise and collaborate with diverse teams
  • Ability to provide support for emergencies outside of normal working hours

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the state in which the employee resides. Pursuant to MSD's Substance Abuse Policy and Procedures, this position has been designated as non-safety sensitive and candidate must pass a Non-D.O.T. Drug Test for this position. Employees occupying this position are not subject to Federal (D.O.T.) Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulations.

All current employees must have a 'Meets Expectations' or 'Proficient' rating on their most recent performance evaluation to be eligible
