BMCC's motto speaks to this shared sen The Student Disability Services Specialist provides comprehensive support to students with disabilities through the coordination of individualized accommodations and academic support services in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and institutional policies. Reporting to the Director of the Office of Accessibility, the Specialist serves as a primary contact for students, faculty, and staff, promoting equal access and fostering an inclusive, supportive learning environment. This role also contributes to campus-wide education and outreach efforts, collaborates with internal and external partners, and supports departmental operations and grant-funded initiatives. The successful candidate will: •Conduct evaluations to determine student eligibility for accommodations, review disability documentation, and create individualized accommodation plans in line with ADA and Section 504. •Provide one-on-one support to help students build effective learning, study, and self-monitoring strategies based on their learning styles and diagnoses. •Coordinate and implement accommodations such as extended time, assistive technology, note-taking, and proctoring; ensure compliance with FERPA and ADA. •Maintain accurate student records, case notes, and documentation of services and referrals. •Collaborate with faculty and staff to ensure proper implementation of accommodations and provide ongoing guidance. •Develop and lead workshops and trainings on disability awareness, learning strategies, inclusive practices, and legal responsibilities for students, faculty, and staff. •Coordinate outreach and maintain relationships with external agencies and partner programs. •Manage the production and distribution of Office of Accessibility communications and materials, both print and digital. •Hire, train, and supervise part-time staff supported by grant funding; prepare related grant reports and documentation. •Support college-wide efforts to improve student retention and persistence. •Stay current on disability law, educational trends, and best practices in higher education accessibility. •Occasionally assist with testing accommodations and supervise proctors as needed. •Contribute to planning and implementing major departmental and college-wide events such as orientation, commencement, and honors convocation. •Must be available for occasional evening and weekend work. QUALIFICATIONSMINIMUM •Bachelor's degree and four years' related experience required. PREFERRED: •Bachelor's degree in Disability Studies, Social Work, Counseling, or a related field required; Master's degree preferred. •Experience in a diverse college or higher education setting preferred, with a background in coordinating and evaluating student support programs. •Knowledge of disability services best practices, especially related to learning disabilities and autism spectrum conditions, with an emphasis on assessment and data-informed decision-making. •Strong organizational, presentation, written, and verbal communication skills. Must be sensitive to the needs of students with disabilities and understand how to support them effectively in a college environment. •Ability to provide excellent customer service in a fast-paced, deadline-driven setting. •Understanding of the cultural, social, and educational needs of a diverse student population. •Involvement in professional associations is a plus. •Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and related software required. Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will be adjusted by 3.25% effective 9/1/2025 and 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
