Phiex Technologies has developed a novel sterilization technology with applications for a range of industries including both medical device and food. We are seeking a Part-Time Lab Technician to join our Applied Research & Development (ARD) team at Innovation Park on the Pennsylvania State University's University Park campus. This individual will work under the guidance of our Director of Applied Research & Development (ARD) contributing to high-impact research projects in a fast-paced and collaborative environment. This role will support the development, testing, and characterization of Phiex's sterilization technologies. The ideal candidate will have hands-on laboratory experience and a strong attention to detail.
This part-time role requires approximately 3 days per week, with the flexibility to accommodate the needs of the team. Current graduate students are encouraged to apply.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Conduct laboratory testing and experiments under the direction of Director of ARD
- Assist in planning and executing test protocols, experiments, and process characterizations related to new and revised products and processes.
- Record and analyze test data according to good documentation practices (GDP) and industry standards such as ISO 13485.
- Assist in conducting physical, chemical, and microbiological testing as part of ongoing research projects, ensuring proper handling and testing of materials.
- Monitor and maintain laboratory inventory, including chemical feedstocks, supplies, and equipment needed for experiments.
- Ensure compliance with lab safety protocols, including maintaining a safe working environment and following all relevant safety regulations.
- Perform routine checks on lab equipment and assist in maintaining the functionality of laboratory instruments and tools.

Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Chemistry (especially electro-chemistry), Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field. Graduate research experience preferred.
- 1-3 years of experience in a laboratory setting, preferably in the fields of microbiology, chemistry, materials science, or related technical areas.
- Experience with laboratory testing and maintaining lab equipment.
- Familiarity with aseptic technique, standard lab practices, and lab safety protocols.

Preferred qualifications:
- Experience with microbiological, physical, and chemical testing methods.
- Knowledge of ISO 13485 or similar quality management systems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Adept with setting up and maintaining routine office and laboratory software such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint.
Physical Activities and Requirements of this Position:
- Communication: Individual must be able to communicate effectively verbally and/or in writing with company personnel.
- Repetitive Motions: Individual may be required to spend periods of time standing, or on a PC.
- Average Visual Abilities: Individual must be able to see laboratory results, equipment status, computer screens, and environment to aid in all activities.
- Physical strength: Individual must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.

Working Conditions:
- This role functions in a lab environment where various large and small equipment is used in conducting testing. This role uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopy/printers, etc. Rarely, this role may require periodic travel, therefore the environment will include all modes of travel (planes, trains, car rental or car services, etc). Infrequently, this role may require employees to work evenings or weekends as needed.
