The Data Scientist will play a critical role in advancing United Way's mission by leveraging data to inform decisions, evaluate programs, and optimize organizational performance. This role will conceive, design, and execute advanced analyses of programs and operations, provide expert guidance on testing and analytical frameworks, and translate complex findings into actionable insights for stakeholders. As a thought leader in data-driven strategy, this position will collaborate across teams to build analytical capacity, establish best practices for experimentation and evaluation, and support the integration of evidence-based decision-making into United Way's work. Through rigorous analysis and clear, compelling presentation of results, this role will help ensure that investments, initiatives, and operations are guided by robust data insights that drive measurable impact across the region.This role is in-office four days per week with the option to work remotely one day per week. Our regional office is located in Cincinnati, OH. We do not fund relocations.KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
- Design and Execute Analytical Projects: Lead the end-to-end process of conceiving, scoping, and executing advanced statistical analyses to evaluate United Way programs, operations, and community impact initiatives.
- Develop and Maintain Data Pipelines: Build and optimize data pipelines and workflows in Microsoft Fabric to ensure timely, accurate, and scalable access to program, operations, and partner data.
- Conduct Statistical Testing and Experimentation: Establish and guide frameworks for testing and evaluation, including A/B tests, quasi-experimental methods, and other analytical approaches to assess program efficacy and inform operational decisions.
- Create Insightful Reports and Dashboards: Translate complex analytical results into accessible, actionable insights through Power BI dashboards, written reports, and presentations tailored for internal leaders, partners, and funders.
- Collaborate with Cross-Functional Teams: Partner closely with program, operations, and leadership teams to define analytical needs, interpret findings, and embed data-driven thinking into decision-making and strategy.
- Establish Best Practices and Frameworks: Provide guidance on analytical methodologies, data quality, and reporting standards to build organizational capacity and ensure rigor and consistency in data use.
- Mentor and Support Data Skills Development: Serve as a resource and mentor for staff and partners, offering training and guidance to enhance their understanding and use of data in their work.
- Drive Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve data collection, integration, and reporting processes that strengthen UWGC's ability to measure outcomes, demonstrate impact, and optimize operations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- 3-5 years of hands-on experience conducting applied analysis, transforming raw data into actionable insights that directly inform decisions or outcomes.
- Strong skills in statistical analysis and data manipulation, with proficiency in Python (including libraries scikit-learn, scipy, etc.) and SQL (data extraction, transformation, and schema definition).
- Commitment to staying hands-on with data and analytical work while also elevating organizational data literacy and rigor.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex findings clearly and effectively, both in written reports and oral presentations tailored to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience guiding analytical conversations, proactively identifying methodological pitfalls, and constructively educating colleagues to foster sound, evidence-based thinking.
- Proven ability to independently conceive, scope, and execute analytical projects without prescriptive direction, demonstrating initiative and problem-solving acumen.
- Collaborative mindset with the ability to build credibility as an analytical leader and influence decisions through well-reasoned, data-driven recommendations.
DESIRED SKILLS & COMPETENCIES:
- Master's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, or another analytical field, or equivalent combination of education and direct analytical experience.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft cloud services (e.g., Microsoft Fabric, Azure) and related tools used for data integration, analysis, and reporting.
- Broad analytical experience spanning multiple domains—such as marketing analytics, operational analysis, and program evaluation—demonstrating adaptability and the ability to apply analytical methods across varied contexts.
- Familiarity with Power BI, Tableau or similar business intelligence tools for developing dynamic dashboards and data visualizations.
- Experience working in mission-driven or nonprofit environments is a plus, particularly with an understanding of social impact measurement and community-focused outcomes.
- Ability to balance deep technical skills with strategic thinking, integrating rigorous analytics into practical recommendations that drive organizational and community impact.
