Statement of Purpose
The Counselor III fulfills assigned role as a part of the treatment team, maintaining the well-being of clients and the integrity of the program.
Major Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities
- Knowledge of drug and alcohol dependency, mental health, family systems, and 12-Step/recovery resources in the community.
- Develop and maintain individualized records of client progress and participation in treatment, including admission and discharge, individual, group, family, vocational literacy training, and other appropriate occasions.
- Write clear, concise statements summarizing clients' feelings, expressions, resistance, and responses to treatment plans, including letters to referral agencies, courts, and probation.
- Confront behavioral changes, identify crises, and recognize when additional assistance is necessary.
- Recognize personal issues impacting job performance and client interactions.
- Demonstrate ethical and professional behavior.
- Respect cultural and lifestyle diversities of clients and staff.
- Prepare for and facilitate specialty groups.
- Knowledge of referrals within and outside the BHS treatment system.
- Understand the philosophy and approach of the 12-Step recovery model (AA, CA, NA, Alanon).
- Communicate clearly with clients, staff, peers, supervisors, and external resources.
- Proficient in computer operations, Windows, MS Word, and adaptable to the Caminar information system.
Competencies and Performance ExpectationsRequirements
All Counselor III's are expected to meet the requirements of Counselor I and II, and additionally:
- Oversee daily program activities.
- Identify crises.
- Train, coach, and mentor staff.
- Make clinical decisions.
- Conduct and facilitate specialty groups.
Prerequisite Qualifications
Qualifications may vary based on the Americans with Disabilities Act. Bilingual abilities may be required within certain programs.
Required: State-recognized chemical dependency counselor certification with current certification number (e.g., CCAPP), or a Master's degree in a related field with registration/enrollment in a certification program, or licensed as MFT or MSW. At least five years of substance abuse work experience. Failure to maintain certification or licensure results in employment loss.
Must have a valid California driver's license and liability insurance if driving a personal vehicle on BHS business. Adequate vision, hearing, manual dexterity, and eye-hand coordination are required. Ability to sit, use a keyboard, write, and move about the facility.
Additional Qualifications (may vary)
- Certification as domestic violence counselor (in lieu of or in addition to chemical dependency counselor certification).
- Class “B” or “C” California Driver's License.
- Personal vehicle with liability insurance for reimbursable mileage.
- First Aid and CPR certifications (obtain within 90 days).
- Medication training (within 30 days).
- Bi-lingual skills (specify).
- Obtain NPI Number.
- Develop computer skills for Caminar/word processing within 90 days.
