About the Position: The City of San Bernardino is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Library Page to join the Library Department. This part-time position supports the operations of several library divisions and plays a key role in delivering valuable services to the community. When assigned to the Jack L. Hill Lifelong Learning Center, the Library Page will assist with adult literacy, English as a Second Language (ESL) programs, and youth homework help. The ideal candidate will be passionate about education and community service, demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills, and enjoy working in a team-oriented environment. Evening and Saturday availability required; up to 19 hours per week. What You'll Be Doing Here The Ideal Candidate:
  • People Skills: Builds effective working relationships with internal staff and the public while demonstrating professionalism, confidence, and responsiveness.
  • Literacy Program Assistance: Supports the Literacy Division by assisting with learner intake, providing one-on-one tutoring, and leading small group classes using pre-developed curriculum.
  • Customer Service: Assists patrons with directional reference questions, helps locate materials, supports basic computer use, and participates in outreach and in-house programs.
  • Communication Skills: Communicates clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, with the ability to explain technical concepts to diverse audiences and represent the City in various settings.
Day in the life consists of: As a Library Page with the City of San Bernardino, your day will focus on supporting the daily operations of the library, ensuring an organized and welcoming environment for all patrons. Whether assisting with literacy programs, maintaining materials, or helping visitors navigate the library, you'll play an important role in providing excellent public service and promoting lifelong learning. Your day may include:
  • Providing one-on-one and small group tutoring to adults seeking to improve their English reading, writing, and speaking skills.
  • Supporting the Homework Help program by assisting K-8 students with English and math assignments.
  • Offering friendly and helpful customer service in person and by phone to ensure a positive library experience for all users.
  • Assisting in the creation of flyers, program displays, and other outreach or promotional materials.
  • Supporting family programs and participating in outreach events that promote library services within the community.
  • Maintaining clean and orderly shelves by straightening, rearranging, and returning materials; monitoring assigned areas for neatness and proper organization.
  • Assisting patrons with locating materials, answering basic reference questions, supporting public computer use, and participating in in-house programs.

If under age 18 and a current student must obtain a valid work permit prior to hire. Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment: A valid State driver's license is required. Knowledge of:
  • Alphabetic and numeric filing systems.
  • Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Basic record keeping methods.
  • Basic methods, practices, and techniques of modern library work.
  • Modern office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications.
  • Principles of public relations.
  • General office policies and procedures, computers, and general office equipment.
  • Equipment maintenance practices and methods.
Skill in:
  • Performing routine library work and accomplishing manual and clerical duties.
  • Assisting library patrons using library resources.
  • Participating in various library outreach activities.

  • Sorting, shelving, and organizing various materials.

Physical Requirements: Employees work in a typical library environment where under the noise level is usually quiet. While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk or hear, both in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to manipulate, handle, feel, or operate standard office equipment, reach with hands and arms; and lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
