Salary : $74,006.40 Annually Location : Fort Dodge Regional Airport 1639 Nelson Avenue Fort Dodge, IA Job Type: Full Time Job Number: 00189 Department: Airport Opening Date: 08/12/2025 Closing Date: 8/22/2025 5:00 PM Central Description The City of Fort Dodge is seeking a proactive, experienced, and highly motivated Airport Operations Supervisor to join the team at the Fort Dodge RegionalAirport. This is a key leadership role responsible for the effective day-to-day operations of the airport, with an emphasis on maintaining a safe, efficient, and regulatory-compliant environment for both aircraft and personnel. The Airport Operations Supervisor plays a pivotal role in the oversight of airfield and facilities maintenance, emergency preparedness and response, and regulatory compliance in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), state, and local requirements. This position ensures that all airport infrastructure-from runways and taxiways to buildings and equipment-is fully operational, properly maintained, and meets the highest standards of safety and performance. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a dynamic environment that requires a combination of hands-on technical skills, operational management, and strategic problem-solving. The Supervisor will lead and coordinate a small team, directing workflow, setting priorities, and ensuring that all aspects of airport operations run smoothly. From snow removal and equipment maintenance to emergency planning and security protocol management, the Airport Operations Supervisor will serve as a crucial member of the airport leadership team. In addition to managing day-to-day tasks, this position will collaborate with airport leadership on long-term planning initiatives, budgeting, and capital improvement projects. The successful candidate will also represent the airport in interactions with federal and state regulators, community stakeholders, and airport users, requiring strong communication and interpersonal skills. This is a highly impactful role with meaningful responsibility in the operation of a vital transportation hub for the region. It offers the opportunity to contribute directly to public safety, economic development, and the overall success of aviation operations in the Fort Dodge area. Examples of Duties
  • Plan, organize, and direct all operations and maintenance activities in compliance with FAA, state, and local regulations.
  • Supervise and coordinate the work of operations staff (2 full-time, 1-2 part-time seasonal).
  • Develop and implement emergency response procedures and safety protocols.
  • Prepare and update operations, security, and emergency procedure manuals.
  • Conduct inspections of runways, lighting systems, vehicles, buildings, and other airport infrastructure.
  • Manage snow removal operations to maintain safety and operational standards.
  • Assist in annual budgeting and purchasing decisions; monitor departmental expenditures.
  • Operate and perform maintenance on a wide range of airport equipment and vehicles.
  • Attend relevant trainings, meetings, and professional conferences.
  • Be available for on-call emergencies and able to work evenings/weekends as needed.
Typical Qualifications
  • Minimum of four years of operations management experience, preferably in an airport environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of airport maintenance and operations.
  • An associate degree in aviation or airport operations is highly preferred.
  • Or, any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge and skills.
Supplemental InformationRequired Skills & Abilities:
  • Mechanical aptitude with ability to use tools, perform welding, and conduct preventative maintenance.
  • Proficient in the operation and upkeep of equipment such as snow plows, tractors, runway sweepers, and more.
  • Strong building maintenance capabilities.
  • Effective communication skills - able to interact with staff, agencies, and the public professionally.
  • Sound mathematical and analytical reasoning skills.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply complex technical documents and instructions.
Special Requirements:
  • Valid Iowa Driver's License and ability to obtain a CDL within 60 days of hire.
  • Ability to obtain Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) Certification (5-day training course).
  • Pass post-offer background check, physical, and drug screening.
  • Must be able to pass a physical exam and stress test for wearing a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).
  • Availability to work varied hours, including evenings, weekends, and on-call emergencies.
