Please note that BYU is a private, religious university and strongly prefers to hire faithful members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.Job DescriptionDigital Imaging Lab ManagerThis position oversees all workflows, technologies, and projects associated with the digitization of published and archival manuscript materials in the Library's Digital Imaging Lab. This position facilitates online access to and preservation of digitized objects. The incumbent directly supervises a FT Digital Initiatives Technical Specialist, and also trains and supervises 10-15 student employees who perform high-level photographic and technical tasks.What you will be doing in this position:Imaging Lab Oversight and Project Management
  • Work with curators and librarians to understand digitization's alignment with library strategic objectives, lab output options, and how to create digitization project proposals
  • Manage daily project workflow in the digital imaging lab
    • Develop timeline and project parameters and instructions
    • Track the progress and performance of all lab projects through quality assurance and statistics
  • Provide leadership in adopting new digitization technologies and standards, and continually analyze lab operations in order to optimize, upgrade, and automate when feasible
Manage Employees
  • Supervise the daily work of 1 FTE and 10-15 student employees who perform tasks including imaging, compliance with national digital imaging standards, image quality assurance, and post-scan image processing based on national specifications and guidelines
Technology Administration and Troubleshooting
  • Provide support for lab employees' digital asset management system issues, error messages, and general capture system troubleshooting, in coordination with the Digital Initiatives Technical Specialist
  • Troubleshoot errors with custom technical applications and scripts
Oversee Pre-ingestion and Ingestion processes
  • Ensure project files are appropriately reformatted by students for loading into one of the library's digital asset management systems for public access, and provide derivatives for Digital Initiatives Technical Specialist to use for transcription projects as required
Digital Initiatives Outreach
  • Report new digital content to Library Marketing, Special Collections Reference team, and other interested parties
  • Promote digitization work with library, campus, and profession through presentations, guest instruction, or tours
University Citizenship and Professional Development
  • Participate in committee assignments in the library and nationally as appropriate
  • Continually expand knowledge base in principles, trends, and technologies of digitization, digital asset management, and transcription
  • Promote positive image of the Digital Initiatives department, the library, and university
  • Attend division, library, and university meetings at which attendance would be appropriate
  • With supervisor, determine other position-related professional development activities and the scope of involvement. (Examples are included in the “Guiding Principles and Procedures Related to Staff/Administrative Professional Development” document.)
What qualifies you for this role:Minimum education/experience required:
  • Bachelor's Degree OR equivalent combination of education and work experience in digitization, photography, digital asset management, and/or project management
Preferred:
  • MLS with emphasis in digital libraries, archival studies, or emerging technologies
  • Two or more years of work experience digitally reformatting archival collections
Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certificationsRequired:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills
  • Excellent supervisory skills and ability to teach adults technical tasks
  • Aptitude and inclination for collaboration and diplomacy with stakeholders and patrons
  • Understanding of the care and handling of rare documents and books during the digitizing process
  • Experience, knowledge, and ability to implement digitizing and metadata standards
  • Ability to work with vendors and information technology partners to troubleshoot problems, negotiate standards, and upgrade software
Preferred:
  • Working knowledge of digital imaging standards, technologies, and color management theory, particularly for implementation in a digital imaging workflow
  • Understanding of bibliographic formats such as MARC catalog records and DACS-compliant finding aids
  • Experience with digital asset management systems and/or Internet Archive software and hardware
Additional CommentsThe digital asset management systems used to host the Digital Imaging Lab's output are CONTENTdm and OrangeDAM. The lab's primary digitization hardware includes cultural heritage photography equipment by Digital Transitions, scanning equipment by Epson, and software by Phase One, Adobe, and custom in-house hardware and software.What we offer in return:This position comes with fantastic benefits, including:
