Laboratory Director, Barnstable Co. Water Quality Laboratory

Summary

Professional, scientific, technical and administrative work overseeing all the Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) activities of the laboratory as required by Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MA DEP), all other related work as required.

Supervision

Exercises supervisory and other departmental duties of the Director in times of Director's absence.

Performs varied responsible administrative, professional, scientific, and technical duties requiring considerable judgment in conducting analysis and the planning, organizing and oversight of laboratory QA/QC activities. Works under the general supervision of the Laboratory Director.

Supervises full-time and part-time staff and a variable number of seasonal analysts and occasionally academic interns.

Essential Functions

Performs analyses and/or provides supervision and training to laboratory analysts performing analyses in the categories for which the supervisor is qualified.

Instructs and provides general supervision of all other laboratory operations including sample tracking, data validation, quality control, verification, and prompt reporting of results.

Ensures the accuracy and reliability of laboratory results by monitoring and maintaining quality control standards, procedures, and equipment, and by reviewing and approving laboratory reports.

Responsible for maintaining documents relating to the certifications and quality assurance to meet all state and federal requirements for legal and other purposes.

Makes decisions regarding the acceptance and non-acceptance of samples submitted to the laboratory for analysis.

Establishes and maintains quality manuals and standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Ensures that laboratory equipment and instruments are calibrated and maintained properly.

Performs routine monitoring and maintenance of equipment.

Ensures the timely testing of samples and production of reports and results; explains results of analysis to staff and customers.

Works closely with the Laboratory Director to plan and execute the purchase of instrumentation to replace existing equipment or address changing water quality monitoring needs.

Responsible for overseeing a safe and compliant workplace by developing and adhering to the laboratory's safety management system; works collaboratively with the Laboratory Safety Officer to properly train all staff, identify hazards, and assess risks associated with laboratory work systems, equipment, instruments and employee functions, continuously monitors corrective actions; establishes safety leadership, responsibility, and accountability.

Remains current in all relevant changes in analytical techniques and technology.

Performs other similar or related duties as required, or as the situation dictates.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or closely related field required with at least 30 credits in chemistry; three to five years of experience in an environmental analysis laboratory; supervisory experience desirable; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
