Learn more about the benefits of working at UCBrief Summary Of Job DutiesIs responsible for management of the Student Machine Shop, which requires journeyman level engineering/machining experience to instruct and supervise students, post-docs and other shop users on student machine equipment and tools to provide students with the experience required to design and fabricate complex experimental equipment for research labs. Serves as instructor of record for formal classes on machine shop techniques (Intro to Machining, Physics Senior Lab), including development of individual class projects. In consultation with Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) develops, teaches, and ensures a high degree of safety protocol in the student shop. Responsible for management of the student shop budget and inventory; responsible for maintenance of student shop equipment.Required Qualifications
- 1-3 years of experience in the construction, fabrication, assembly, and testing of equipment.
- 1-3 years of experience utilizing Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software.
- 1-3 years of experience machining in a student or professional shop environment.
- Excellent communication and listening skills to effectively collaborate with and advise a wide variety of customers.
- Organizational abilities and decision-making to prioritize work assignments.
- Analytical and judgement skills to conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations.
- Working knowledge of metallurgy.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in related area or equivalent experience/training.
- 1-3 years of experience teaching concepts and techniques of machining to students, interns, or entry-level machinists.
- Experience managing inventory and purchases within a budget.
- Experience designing ultra-high vacuum systems.
- Knowledge and ability to independently anticipate critical design/fabricating issues impacting construction of components and systems.

- 60% Student Machine Shop Management - Instruction and Training - Responsible for supervision of and instructing students, post-docs and other shop users in the use of all student machine equipment and tools. Serves as instructor of record for formal classes on machine shop techniques (Intro to Machining, Physics Senior Lab), including development of individual class projects*. Available during non-class Student Shop open hours to provide hands on guidance and instruction to any student shop users. Regularly provide maintenance checks of all student shop equipment and tools; maintain and repair equipment as needed. Special attention will be made in all areas of safety in relation to industrial standards and university criteria. Ensure that all equipment to be repaired or modified is free of all possible chemical, radiological and biological contamination. *Note function #6 below.
- 20% Design and Industrial Engineering - In consultation with faculty, post-docs and other researchers, develops laboratory equipment and instrumentation. Anticipates critical design/fabricating issues impacting components and systems. Utilizes current Computer Aided Design, (CAD) software technology to supplement design criteria and provide structural finite element analysis. Import and utilize numerous types of CAD designed programs and formats. Program of computer-controlled machinery, using Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software to produce detailed 4-axis CNC mill as required by manufacturing outline.
- 20% Budget Management, Inventory Control, Procurement and Development - Management of the Student Shop annual budget, including short- and long- range planning for equipment replacement. Work closely with the Department Manager and Machine Shop Manager on annual budget projections. Maintain and revise as needed Student Shop inventory and independently make purchases within budget. Using Material Data Handbooks, online reference material, and expertise, independently determines which components and materials will be best suited for the project at hand. Compares component vendors for quality, compatibility, price and delivery. Engage with Campus Development to facilitate Student Shop tours, photographs, write-ups, and other activities to promote Student Shop activities to current and potential donors.
- 0% Educator - This position also consists of the following teaching duties that will be classified at and appointed to the appropriate academic teaching title, as determined by the Office of Academic Personnel: serving as instructor of record for Physics 594, Special Topics/ Intro to Machining [2 units], safe usage of machine tools will be taught in a small group setting, on a tool-by-tool basis, to promote familiarity, ease and independence when working on individual university-related projects.
