Department/Division: New Product Development / Woody Ornamental and Edible Department

Reports to: Woody Portfolio Manager or Director of Woody Products

Location: Star Roses and Plants, West Grove, PA - This position has heavy travel expectations

The opportunity: As the Woody Technical Advisor for Star Roses and Plants (SRP), you will serve as an expert and champion for the company's proprietary woody genetics. This means working as a liaison between woody leadership, sales teams, customers, and suppliers to improve, fortify, and grow the woody program across all pipelines and teams. Your day may involve walking field trials with growers, providing technical advice, or educating sales team members on presenting the company's genetics to customers. This is a unique position in a rapidly growing program!

Responsibilities you can expect:

  • Serve on woody leadership and production planning committees and participate in sales meetings. Collaborate with the new product development team to select new varieties for introduction.
  • Act as a liaison between woody leadership and sales teams to align strategies and resources, aiming to grow market share and foster relationships with growers and suppliers.
  • Spend time in the field with sales reps, training them to understand customer needs in woody plants and how SRP's products meet those needs with solutions.
  • Represent SRP woody genetics at regional and national trade events. Promote awareness and excitement about existing and future varieties. Lead initiatives to move customers toward SRP proprietary woody products.
  • Provide onsite or remote technical support to customers and suppliers to ensure success in the woody category. Collect and organize data from plant trials to encourage the addition of new varieties to customer offerings.

Requirements:

Work environment: Ability to work in an office, outdoors, and while traveling. Must be able to sit, stand, bend, reach, and operate standard office equipment. Will be exposed to various environmental conditions during travel and site visits, including temperature extremes, humidity, and potentially toxic materials.

Travel requirements: 50–70% across North America, including travel with sales reps, visiting customers and partners, attending industry events, and traveling to the Pennsylvania facility. Ability to travel internationally to Canada is required.

You have this:

  • Bachelor's degree in Horticulture or a related field, or equivalent experience. Product knowledge of woody/tree markets is required.
  • At least 5 years of experience as a head grower, production manager, or trials manager involved with woody/tree liners or finished plants.
  • Hands-on experience with woody plant propagation, growing, pest and disease management, and related protocols and challenges.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a collaborative approach to problem-solving with sales and growers.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and related software, with good general PC skills.
