Research Animal Resources is seeking a Large Animal Facility Specialist to be an essential member of the research team, providing high standards of animal care, welfare, and technical assistance to support research initiatives. The role involves working independently on routine yet complex tasks, adhering to policies such as the USDA Animal Welfare Act, ILAR Guide, Johns Hopkins University policies, and standard operating procedures for the animal facility. Responsibilities include sanitation, husbandry, and support functions for a variety of laboratory animals, primarily focusing on large species such as pigs, sheep, dogs, cats, and non-human primates, with at least 70% effort dedicated to these species.
Note: This is a Bargaining Unit position. Newly hired employees will be probationary for 90 days, after which they may become union members and benefits-eligible if employment continues beyond four months. The university will notify the union.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform tasks related to animal cage washing, sanitation, and sterilization.
- Feed, water, and provide husbandry for animals, following detailed instructions and schedules.
- Use aseptic techniques and disease prevention principles in specialized environments, including handling non-human primates and large animals.
- Monitor animal health, report irregularities, and provide routine treatments as instructed.
- Assist with social introductions and animal enrichment activities.
- Perform euthanasia following proper training and protocols.
- Receive, examine, and process incoming animals and materials, maintaining accurate records.
- Maintain environmental controls and report deviations.
- Perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance on cages and equipment.
- Ensure proper waste disposal and adhere to safety policies, using personal protective equipment as required.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment and perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from AALAS.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Understanding of animal husbandry, research techniques, and regulations for laboratory animals.
- Ability to handle animals safely, follow detailed instructions, and maintain accurate records.
- Flexibility to work weekends and holidays, and interact respectfully with diverse individuals.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work with safety equipment, lift up to 50 lbs, and move around campus regularly.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least one year of laboratory animal care or related experience.
