Reporting to the Associate Controller, this role manages the day-to-day activities of The Museum of Modern Art accounting operations mainly related to: a) Investments (record, reconcile, and report the monthly activity of a $1.8B investment portfolio ensuring accurate financial reporting and compliance with relevant accounting standards); b) Fixed Assets (manage and record fixed assets ensuring accuracy in their valuation, depreciation; and c) General Accounting Operations (donor accounting, accounts receivable, debt and charitable gift annuity functions of the Museum). The Manager ensures compliance with U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls, leads process improvements and automation, and supervises staff.
Responsibilities:
Investment Related:
- Accurately prepares and records monthly investment activity from a third-party investment administrator and uploads data into MoMA's accounting system (Certinia). Responsible for the preparation of a monthly investment roll forward schedule. Reviews the completeness and accuracy of capital calls, and distributions per investment manager notices, and interacts with the investment team to resolve any discrepancies and accounting issues related to the roll forward.
- Books monthly change in market-to-market valuation of swap investment instruments.
- Manages the process for stock donations and coordinates results and dispositions with Development and Investment staff.
- Utilizes donor related pledge agreements to record the general ledger activity (e.g. pledged amount, discounts, allowance for uncollectible pledges, etc.) and maintains a monthly pledge roll forward schedule
- Maintains and updates debt obligation roll forward and related interest, bond discount and premium amortization schedules.
- Reconciles monthly all investment accounts, debt and pledge accounts.
Fixed Assets Related:
- Tracks the value of long-term assets such as property, plant, and equipment.
- Applies depreciation methods to fixed assets and ensures compliance with accounting standards and regulations.
- Prepares monthly fixed assets depreciation entry and creates acquisition and asset disposals in ERP module.
- Prepares fixed asset rollforward schedule and analyzes work-in-progress capital projects.
Accounting Operations Related:
- Responsible for the recording of funds with/without donor restrictions in the general ledger, including but not limited to preparing monthly journal entries and recording adjusted journal entries.
- Researches and reconciles all discrepancies in the funds.
- Supervises the accounts receivable accountant and all required deliverables, including aging analysis, restaurant rent calculations, approving and posting journal entries, and lease calculations.
- Oversees the accuracy of general ledger entries associated with the weekly booking of cash receipts from retail, membership, and visitor engagement.
- Assists with oversight of the charitable gift annuity program. Gathers documents for annual state filing, prepares and submits bank redemption paperwork for quarterly annuitant payments, and ensures adequate funding of reserve liability.
- Participates in the annual audit with the independent accountants, including year-end schedule preparation, footnote disclosures relating to contribution receivables, debt, liquidity, and endowment net assets. Assists with preparation of cash flow statement.
- Leads recruitment efforts for select open positions. Develops, mentors, and manages staff on an ongoing basis. Conducts annual goal setting and performance reviews with direct staff.
- Performs special projects as assigned and address ad-hoc requests and issues.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or relevant work experience. MBA or CPA preferred.
- Minimum of five to seven years working in accounting or audit, with an emphasis on non-profit or higher education.
- Minimum three years comparable working experience in supervisory capacity.
- Familiar with local/US GAAP, compliance in financial & accounting management and internal controls.
- Experience in driving and implementing process improvement to enhance internal controls over operational accounting processes and systems
- Strong analytical skills and advanced software skills, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Salesforce and Certinia experience a plus.
- Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills with regard to establishing and maintaining a professional and effective working relationship with staff.
- Provides oversight, training, and coaching to staff

Salary range: Minimum of $100,000 to a maximum of $120,000 per annum
