The Director of Construction oversees all aspects of residential construction projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget and to excellent quality standards. This role exists to develop, support and empower our Project Leaders and construction teams, while holding high standards of accountability, execution and excellence across the entire Production process.
As Director, we must work closely with the Pre-Construction, Finance and People teams to ensure a unified operation that reflects our Purpose > People > Process > Product ethos. We serve first as members of the Holland Homes Leadership Team—committed to leading with humility, excellence and an urgent desire to serve our team, our homeowners and our trade partners well.
This is an Auburn-based role that requires daily presence and involvement in the office, in the field and among our community of Project Leaders and trade partners.
Key Responsibilities:
Team Leadership
- Lead and mentor Project Leaders and field staff with clarity and consistency.
- Foster a culture of ownership, responsiveness and team alignment.
- Set high expectations and provide clear coaching pathways for growth and performance.
- Oversee and collaborate with the People team on all production recruiting, onboarding and development initiatives.
Production Oversight
- Own the schedule and ensure that all job starts and completions are aligned with our commitment to homeowners and internal milestones.
- Work closely with Pre-Con to ensure every job is fully ready at handoff—complete with startup packages, permits, and accurate takeoffs.
- Maintain daily visibility into each community's progress and support Project Leaders in problem-solving real-time challenges.
Budget + Value Engineering
- Work with Finance and Pre-Con to manage and track all job costs, review trade pricing and implement cost-saving strategies without sacrificing quality.
- Participate in all buyouts and estimating reviews to refine construction methods, reduce waste and improve margins.
- Champion values engineering initiatives that align with both operational efficiency and customer experience.
Quality Control
- Lead job walk-throughs and implement field-level quality standards.
- Ensure all homes meet or exceed Holland Homes' standards before and during construction.
- Work with the Homeowner Experience Coordinator to proactively address potential warranty and quality issues.
Compliance and Safety
- Ensure every jobsite meets OSHA and local code compliance at all times.
- Hold regular field audits and corrective training.
- Maintain current knowledge of changing regulations and ensure company-wide adherence.
Reporting and Continuous Improvement
- Provide weekly updates to the Executive Team on community progress, budget impact and issues.
- Track performance metrics (build cycle times, budget variances, inspection results) and lead corrective action initiatives when needed.
- Own the process for post-close analysis and VPO review to drive future improvement.
Stakeholder + Trade Partner Relations
- Represent the Production team in company meetings and planning sessions.
- Work collaboratively with trade partners, suppliers and other departments to ensure smooth operations across jobs.
- Help ensure we are the builder of choice for top trades and maintain strong partnerships.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Building Science, Engineering or related field preferred.
- Proven experience leading residential construction teams, preferably in volume homebuilding.
- Deep understanding of build schedules, permitting, trade management and quality standards.
- Strong interpersonal and team leadership skills with a bias for action and problem-solving.
- Proficient in BuilderTrend or similar project management tools.
