Emergency Vehicle Technician SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Fire Fleet Maintenance Supervisor, this position is responsible for assisting in daily operations for the Fire Department maintenance division including performing skilled mechanical work, planning, prioritizing, assigning, and monitoring progress of workflow to ensure compliance with the Fire Department's goals and objectives. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Note: All City of Fort Smith positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Must show cooperation and respect to fellow employees and supervisors at all times. • Perform all duties safely, responsibly, and proficiently observing all safety and health rules • Provide assistance in specific areas of maintenance and repair • Subject to recall during off-duty hours for critical vehicle repairs. • Perform various types of routine and skilled work in connection with the inspections, diagnoses, repairs and/or replaces components in drive trains, suspensions, fuel systems, electrical systems, air systems, hydraulic systems, brake systems, all other systems found on fire apparatus and other department vehicles, equipment, stationary equipment, small equipment, including any associated components • Diagnose structural or operating deficiencies and perform repairs of automotive, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic systems and structural issues on small, mid-size, and heavy duty equipment • Identify unsatisfactory operating conditions by observing meters, gauges, and other measuring devices • Assist in preventive maintenance and scheduling activities • Source, read, and effectively interpret technical service data, schematics, and mechanical drawings • Prepare estimates of labor and materials necessary to accomplish the maintenance and repair of equipment • Submit records and written reports of work performed, including work orders, parts lists, invoices, and other paperwork as required • Schedule work performed by outside service repair centers • Evaluate operator's daily reports and service requests and provide feedback as appropriate • Utilize computerized maintenance management systems to generate reports and research fleet work orders, monitor inventory levels, and review prior or scheduled maintenance activity • Prepare and submit requisitions as needed to ensure Fleet equipment repairs and inventory levels meet operational requirements • Regular attendance and timeliness is required QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Minimum Qualifications • High school diploma or GED • Valid Driver's License • Completion of private, public, military, or trade school curriculum that includes theory and on-the-job work • Within two (2) years of appointment, obtain and maintain the appropriate Automotive Service Excellence (A.S.E.) Certifications and Emergency Vehicle Technician (E.V.T.) Certifications for Level III (master) EVT status for Fire Apparatus Technician. • Minimum of three (3) years hands-on mechanical experience with hydraulic, electrical, automotive, and mechanical systems on small, mid-size and large equipment (mobile and stationary) in a commercial, industrial, or facilities operations setting • Previous experience in metal fabrication and welding • Previous data entry experience, recording of data records and inventory • May consider any equivalent combination of education, certification, experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work Preferred Qualifications • Associate's Degree in Automotive Technology or field related degree/certification • Five (5) years of related professional experience • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certified • Previous fire apparatus repair experience, specifically Pierce Manufacturing OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: • Strong organization and time management skills with ability to determine workload priorities and meet deadlines • Ability to read and comprehend documents such as Safety Data Sheets, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals • Knowledge of the use of tools and equipment used in the department • Familiar with proper procedures for working with chemicals and safe disposal of hazardous materials • Proficient with the use of hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring equipment • Proficient with gas and arc welding equipment • Experienced with the use of diagnostic equipment, mobile hydraulic equipment, and other trade related tools or equipment • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook) and the ability to perform computer-aided electronic system diagnosis • Ability to track parts and materials in a computerized maintenance management system • Use and terminology of requisitions, purchase orders, invoices, and other purchasing and inventory documents • Ability to perform basic math, including but not limited to addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division • Ability to effectively work without immediate supervision • Ability to effectively communicate with others verbally and in writing • Speed, accuracy, problem solving and analytical ability • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills • Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment, and aptitude to learn new software applications as needed POSITION DESIGNATIONS This position is designated as essential during inclement weather events. City services will be maintained during inclement weather, such as heavy snow or ice storms and all essential employees are expected to report to work due to the critical functions of the position. This position is not able to work remotely. (based on need and supervisor approval) This position does have the potential to drive as part of their regular job duties.
