Responsibilities The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Voice Switch and Recorder (VS&R) Program Office manages seven different programs that provide critical voice communications and legal recording systems for high availability Air Traffic Control (ATC) communications within the FAA's National Airspace System (NAS). The VS&R Program Office is responsible for the acquisition of modern Internet Protocol (IP) ATC Voice Communications Systems (VCSs), including requirements development, procurement, verification, validation, testing, implementation, and deployment. It also manages the full lifecycle sustainment and logistics for existing legacy ATC VCSs used throughout the NAS. The FAA Security Engineer will provide hands-on cybersecurity support to the FAA Security Lead and Technical Team at the William J. Hughes Technical Center for Advanced Aerospace. The role involves helping FAA achieve security and technical milestones related to the procurement, verification, validation, testing, and deployment of modern IP-VCSs and Air-to-Ground Protocol Converters (APCs). The Security Engineer will offer expertise on system security implementations, analyze and track security risks/issues, utilize system hardening knowledge, Linux skills, and collaborate with stakeholders to achieve security authorization for FAA ATC VCS systems and tools. Required Qualifications The candidate must possess a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Information System Security, Cybersecurity, or a related discipline, plus 6-15 years of relevant hands-on experience. Skills The candidate must have knowledge, skills, and abilities in Linux System Administration, Networking, and System Security, including: Linux System Administration: Hands-on experience with Linux terminal, bash scripting, package and server configuration, understanding of Linux structure, and automation tools like Ansible, Docker, Jenkins. Networking: Understanding of OSI Model, network design, VLAN/subnetting, router & switch management, network protocols, Wireshark, IPv5/IPv6, firewall configuration. System Security: Experience with system, port, vulnerability scanning, security standards (NIST 800-53, HSPD-23, ISO 27001), penetration testing, cryptographic protocols, and documenting security requirements for procurement. Desired Qualifications Knowledge of FAA and NAS, strong reasoning skills, experience in technical meetings, communication skills, familiarity with C/C++, Python, Golang, Rust, version control, embedded Linux, data structures, and algorithms.
