Job Description :
Position Summary: Draws blood and other specimens from patients for analysis or other medical purposes and assists with diagnostic testing in the laboratory and/or other patient care areas by performing the following duties personally. Responsible for ensuring that all critical tasks are fulfilled on a timely basis. Critical Tasks:
  • Efficiently performs venipuncture, capillary collections with minimum discomfort and according to established policies and procedures.
  • Independently procures specimens.
  • Takes all steps necessary to ensure 100% accuracy of patient data, test documentation, and recordkeeping.
  • Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic techniques following clinical laboratory standards and department procedures.
  • Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection.
  • Processes and registers specimens using the laboratory information system.
  • Assembles equipment such as tourniquets, needles, disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton, and alcohol on work tray according to requirements for specified procedures.
  • Verifies and records patient identities.
  • Complies fully with all patient and data confidentiality policies and regulations, including, but not limited to HIPAA.
  • Performs administrative and clerical duties as required and/or directed, such as answering patient inquiries and communicating by telephone and through electronic means.
  • Demonstrates ability to regularly change priorities to accomplish all tasks despite frequent interruptions.
  • Demonstrates ability to clearly communicate, both orally and in writing, while performing all essential functions.
  • Records, files and distributes reference lab reports.
  • Inventories and requisitions supplies and stocks work area as needed.
  • Performs other special projects and duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician Certificate preferred.
  • 1 year phlebotomy work experience in a laboratory environment preferred.
  • Current and continuing BLS training and certification.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate to diverse cultures and specifically the Gila River Community and/or other Native American cultures and community health services.
