Job DescriptionAbout us:The Ed Thomas Water Treatment Plant (Ed Thomas WTP) was dedicated to city service on August 30, 1950. Surface water from Stoney Creek Reservoir was pumped to the treatment plant. Initially, up to 3 million gallons per day (MGD) could be treated and pumped into the distribution system to provide city residents and businesses with water. The water plant has undergone two expansions in the last 50 years. The current plant capacity is 16 MGD with an average treated volume of 8-10 MGD.What you will do:This role involves semi-skilled manual labor to maintain water and wastewater facilities and their grounds, ensuring cleanliness, safety, and proper appearance. Key responsibilities include landscaping, equipment maintenance, patching, truck driving, loading/unloading supplies, weed control, traffic direction, and janitorial duties. The position also includes maintaining plant structures and performing labor-intensive tasks. This classification requires more knowledge and independence compared to the Maintenance Worker I role, as it involves performing tasks without direct supervision.Examples of DutiesValve and System Maintenance:* Monitors water and wastewater valves by manually operating them with a valve key or wrench, ensuring proper function and reporting any replacement needs to supervisor* Assists with routine water line flushing to maintain system integrityFacility and Equipment Maintenance:* Paints various equipment and buildings to preserve their condition* Handles incoming deliveries and stocks supplies for daily operationsLandscaping and Grounds Care:* Manages general landscaping tasks including mowing (both riding and push mowers), trimming, pruning, and cutting trees and shrubs* Clears snow from sidewalks and applies ice melting materials for safetyPlant Cleaning and Safety:* Cleans and maintains sedimentation basins to ensure proper operation* Empties trash and recycling containers and performs janitorial tasks like mopping floors and cleaning offices, hallways, and restrooms* Sets up wet floor signs to prevent accidentsWater Sampling and Support:* Assists lab assistants with gathering and distributing water samples for testingAdditional Duties:* Performs a wide range of related duties as required to support plant and grounds operationsQualificationsMaintenance Knowledge and Skills:* Strong understanding of general maintenance tasks specific to water or wastewater treatment facilities* Skilled in operating a wide range of maintenance equipment including mowers, tractors, leaf blowers, forklifts, chainsaws, weed eaters, and other related tools* Proficient in seeding, applying straw, fertilizing, mowing, shoveling, raking, and managing landscaping tasksWorkplace Competencies:* Capable of following supervisor instructions and completing tasks with minimal oversight* Adept at identifying and reporting necessary maintenance or repair needs to supervisors* Ability to work both independently and as part of a team to achieve operational goalsRelationship Building:* Skilled in establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with City employees and the general public, ensuring smooth operations and clear communication.Minimum Qualifications:* High School Diploma or GED equivalency and some work experience in general maintenance work, preferably in a water treatment plant, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.* Valid Driver's LicenseSupplemental InformationPhysical Requirements and Working Conditions:* Work in this class is described as medium and frequently requires physical exertion to complete tasks and move objects.* Work typically involves the ability to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, hearing and repetitive motions.* The employee is required to have the visual acuity to be the operator of trucks, forklifts, cranes, and other equipment.* Employee is subject to hazards including physical conditions with proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, exposure to chemicals, noise, and atmospheric conditions.* Working conditions include both inside and outside environmental conditions.FLSA Status:Non-ExemptInclement Weather Classification:Essential
