Only current Carlsbad Unified School District employees who have passed their probationary period may apply. This is a promotional recruitment to establish an eligibility list to fill the current vacant position. The eligibility list will be used to fill any vacancies which may occur within a period of one year, or until the eligibility list is depleted.The current vacancy is 8 hours per day, 7:30 am - 4:30 pm, 12 months per year at a district office. The recruitment process will consist of a training and experience evaluation and a structured interview. BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of the Director-Information Systems & Technology, perform a variety of specialized activities involved in the design, installation, configuration, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, diagnosis and repair of network systems and related computers, equipment, hardware and software; administer, evaluate and modify network systems to assure proper operation, security and connectivity. Essential Duties and Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Perform a variety of specialized activities involved in the design, installation, configuration, operation, maintenance and repair of Local Area Networks (LANs), Wide Area Networks (WANs) and other network systems and related equipment, hardware and software; monitor and evaluate network performance to assure smooth and efficient operation and identify problems and concerns. Troubleshoot, diagnose and resolve problems with network hardware, equipment and related peripherals including servers, hubs, routers, user stations, cabling, switches, wiring, printers, bridges and other network components; configure and adjust components as needed; repair and replace hardware as needed; administer and maintain network system servers; resolve connectivity issues. Perform a variety of network administration activities including establishing and maintaining user accounts, permissions, directories, passwords, group memberships, shared folders, e-mail accounts, internet connectivity and designated programs and systems; monitor and maintain network system security; run anti-virus programs as needed; implement anti-virus solutions and security patches. Provide assistance to District computer users with resolving hardware and software malfunctions; receive telephone calls concerning technology problems and malfunctions; provide general troubleshooting, determine type of request and provide solutions; implement corrective actions over the phone or in person. Install server and work station software; test applications to assure proper operation; configure hardware and software to assure network access and smooth system operations; troubleshoot and resolve computer hardware, software and operating system malfunctions; install hardware and software upgrades as needed. Configure and adjust network hardware, devices, software, system settings and equipment to assure smooth and efficient functioning of computer systems; monitor and adjust settings in response to equipment and system utilization; replace cabling, equipment and devices as necessary. Participate in the planning, design, installation, configuration and modification of LANs, WANs and other network systems; estimate equipment, material, hardware, hardware, time and cost requirements for network projects; collaborate with District staff in preparing for site or District-wide software upgrades and hardware implementation. Provide for effective and efficient backups, storage, retrieval, customization and archiving of data; troubleshoot and resolve database problems; repair corrupt database files; assure data integrity; monitor available system space; move files to provide for efficient program and system running. Research and evaluate new computer and network hardware and software for possible implementation; confer with users concerning system needs; provide recommendations concerning the purchasing and implementation of new technologies including hardware and software. Provide training and support to technology users concerning computer, network and related hardware and software operations; respond to inquiries and provide technical information concerning related practices, techniques and procedures. Communicate with personnel and various outside agencies to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns. Operate a variety of computers, servers, peripherals and specialized software; drive a vehicle to conduct work. Maintain various records and logs related to networks, computer, security and assigned activities. OTHER DUTIES: Perform related duties as assigned. LAN and WAN usage, implementation and network terminology. Database structures, on-line applications and system capabilities of the District's computer systems. General principles, theories and techniques of network design. Applicable types of cabling systems, servers, hubs, routers and other related equipment. Computer operating systems and software applications. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Oral and written communication skills. Record-keeping techniques. ABILITY TO: Perform a variety of specialized activities involved in the design, installation, configuration, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, diagnosis and repair of network systems and related computers, equipment, hardware and software. Administer, evaluate and modify network systems to assure proper operation and connectivity. Troubleshoot, diagnose and resolve problems with computers, networks, hardware, software and related peripherals. Participate in the planning, design, installation, configuration and modification of LANs and WANs. Install and assure proper operation of server and work station software. Perform a variety of network administration activities including establishing and maintaining user accounts, passwords, security applications, e-mail accounts and internet connectivity. Repair and replace network hardware as needed. Maintain network system security, servers and databases. Provide for effective and efficient storage, retrieval, customization and archiving of data. Configure network and user station settings to assure optimal utilization of system resources. Install and configure network hardware, cabling and related equipment. Meet schedules and time lines. Work independently with little direction. Maintain various records related to work performed. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Entrance Qualifications EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: associate's degree with course work in computer science or related field and four years experience involving the installation, maintenance and repair of network systems and related equipment, hardware and software. Carlsbad Unified School District aspires for our staff to reflect the rich diversity of our students Pay Increases: New classified employees are typically placed on the first step of the assigned salary range. Step increases occur annually until Step 5 is reached, after which longevity steps are allocated in accordance with years of service. Benefits: Employees working 4 hours per day or more will be provided an option of Anthem Blue Cross HMO or Kaiser health benefits, as well as Delta Dental and EyeMed Vision benefits; employee contribution amounts are shared with the District and vary depending on number of hours worked per day. (Employees may opt out of medical, dental and vision insurance but may require to provide proof of other health coverage.) The district also pays into a life insurance policy for all employees who work at least 4 hours per day. Additional options for life insurance and disability insurance are available. Vacation: New employees earn vacation time on a basis of 1 day for each month in paid status, resulting in up to 12 days of vacation time per year, prorated based on months worked per year. Employees with years of longevity may earn up to 25 days of vacation time per year, prorated based on months worked per year. Holidays: Employees are allocated up to 15 scheduled holidays and 2 floating holidays per year; holidays are prorated based on months worked per year. Sick and Personal Necessity: Employees earn sick leave on a basis of 1 day for each month in paid status, resulting in up to 12 days of sick time per year. Employees may use up to 7 days of their sick leave balance each year for personal necessity purposes. Retirement: Retirement: Employees working 4 or more hours per day and those already contributing to CalPERS will be automatically enrolled into CalPERS upon hire. The District's CalPERS formula is 2% at 55 for employees enrolled with CalPERS prior to 12/31/2012 and 2% at 62 for employees who have already or will enroll into CalPERS as of 01/01/2013 or afterward. Employees working less than 4 hours per day will be included in an alternative retirement plan based on the use of pretax contributions.
