Position Type: School Nurse/School Nurse - Health Services Date Posted: 8/5/2025 Location: Dodge City Public Schools - Northwest Elementary Full Time School Year Pay Range: Associate's Degree RN: $21.31 - $33.34/hour Bachelor's Degree RN: $23.04 - $36.04/hour PURPOSE: The purpose of the School Nurse position is to provide oversight and direction of district health services within assigned buildings. A school nurse must work closely with students, parents, administrators, and staff in order to minimize absence due to illness and to contribute to the maintenance of high standards for the health and well-being of district students and staff. EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS:Education:
  • Kansas State Board of Nursing Licensure as a Registered Nurse.
  • Education degree requirements for RN Licensure.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.
Experience:
  • At least one year of experience as a registered nurse.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills; bilingual fluency would be helpful.
  • Ability to make health related presentations to students and adults.
  • Strong problem solving and organizational skills.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to attend to details.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Be able to evaluate and interpret data and compile written reports in narrative and statistical form.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop and monitor the district school health program in cooperation with other nurses, health care professionals, teachers, administrators, and other appropriate staff.
  • Help students attain an optimum level of physical, social, and emotional health.
  • Establish and/or maintain health records in compliance with state law for all students in assigned schools.
  • Ensure that all activities conform to federal, state, and/or local policies and requirements.
  • Work effectively with community organizations and various health/social welfare agencies.
  • Establish and maintain a comprehensive health program for students, parents, and employees of the district.
  • Conduct student health appraisals, including Vision, Dental, & Hearing Screenings, and Weighing & Measuring.
  • Consultation with teachers and parents regarding health problems.
  • Provide faculty and staff with first-aid training and supplies.
  • Maintain AEDs in working order, inspect and document monthly checks.
  • Assist in providing emergency care for accidents and sudden illness of pupils; administer first aid in accordance with established policies or procedures.
  • Notify parents and building administrators regarding children who are severely ill or injured, file accident reports for serious injuries.
  • Apply district policies and state laws concerning immunizations, health assessments, and other health matters.
  • Complete yearly audit of all student health records for immunization compliance; notify parents or guardians of needed immunizations/boosters. Provide certificate of immunization for all kindergarten students to the Kansas State Department of Health.
  • Confer with parents and community agencies concerning the health of children. Participate, when appropriate, in the work of health-related curriculum committees.
  • Assist in the prevention and control of communicable diseases.
  • Assist in referral and planning programs for exceptional children.
  • Counsel with teachers, students, and parents concerning children's individual health problems.
  • Maintain a cumulative health folder for each student.
  • Submit accurate and timely reports as required by various health agencies. Immediately report to the principal any safety hazards or unsanitary conditions observed in the school environment.
  • Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas and techniques.
  • Obtain prior approval from the appropriate supervisor for all activities and expenditures.
  • Enforce compliance with health assessment regulations for all new Kansas students up to the age of nine.
  • Implement policy on exclusion and re-admission of students in connection with infections and contagious diseases; provide parents with appropriate information concerning the specific disease involved.
  • Act as resource person concerning school health needs.
  • Train and supervise paraprofessionals or other caregivers regarding delegated nursing tasks; provide delegated care instructions in writing.
  • Other duties as assigned by a principal or other administrative staff.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk and hear.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 50 pounds.
  • The work environment is in an office setting.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
