The Barrio Logan (BL) High School Program (HSP) Specialist organizes, oversees and coordinates the High School Program (HSP: 9th-11th grade). The BL HSP Specialist is responsible for coordinating and implementing day-to-day student programming including weekly workshops following BLCI's Academic, Behavioral, and College Knowledge (ABC) model, individualized student guidance, field trips, and other enrichment activities.

The BL HSP Specialist works closely with parents to meet student needs and programmatic expectations. The BL HSP Specialist is also responsible for documenting data, information, and metrics designed to help measure, assess, and report on student success indicators.

Responsibilities:

Student Support

  • Build a mentoring relationship with their students to build strong communication and engagement.
  • Provide holistic, 1-1 individualized advising for students
  • Develop and implement academic plans that are student-specific
  • Collaborate with colleagues to identify and address how to best support each student and ensure promotion to the next program level
  • Expose students to new and diverse speakers, role models, and colleagues
  • Cultivate personal and academic understanding with students and families
  • Engage each student proactively and provide interventions as needed.
  • Track student attendance and academic progress and provide support as needed
  • Identify and address any deficiencies or issues as they presentthemselves
  • Complete assessments for all students
  • Deliver workshops in a diverse, engaging, and tailored way.
  • Provide workshops for students based on the ABC Model
  • Develop creative student opportunities with innovative activities and external presenters
  • Set a productive and structured yet fun environment for students
  • Facilitate unique, educational, and cultural experiences/activities for student growth.
  • Coordinate tutors in all subject areasas needed
  • Promote and implement bootcamps and external opportunities
  • Plan and implement field trips, workshops, career days, conference visits, trips, and other extracurricular activities.
  • This may include multi-day college campus visits.
  • Attend the 11th grade, 5-day college trip to Northern California and assist the Barrio Logan College & Career Success Specialist with planning the trip, as needed.
  • Aid students and parents in the application process to public, charter or private schools.
  • Assist with student recruitment for the high school program throughout s chools and the community.
  • Collect new application documents, conduct interviews with new applicants and notify acceptance status to families applying to the High School Program

Parent Services

  • Plan, coordinate, and provide parent workshops, trainings, individual meetings, and facilitate assistance related to the High School Program.
  • Meet with families to set and review goals and academic plans.
  • Serve as a first point-of-contact and resource for all student-related concerns, including obstacles to academic success.
  • Serve as a liaison to the schools, teachers, and the community.
  • Facilitate access to communication with parents in their preferred language as much as possible.
  • Responsible for tracking and recording parent hours and reporting them to the BL Director.
  • Create, update, and implement effective curriculum.
  • Develop and deliver workshop curriculum focused on the BLCI “ABC Model” with a strong emphasis on delivering College Knowledge
  • Provide syllabi and other materials proactively for all activities
  • Maintain the HSP weekly schedule and monthly calendars
  • Ensure that workshop supplies are available as needed
  • Set and deliver program expectations and requirements with students.
  • Aid and support preparation for the college application process by explaining different college systems, identifying resources for college entrance exams, financial aid, summer immersion programs, community service opportunities, etc.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the coordination and execution of college and career fairs.
  • Work together with other BLCI Specialists to identify and explore areas of opportunity.

Data Collection

  • Collaborate with colleagues to complete and implement annual pre, mid, and post assessments.
  • Understand and report all relevant datato stakeholders.
  • Collect, enter, and maintain data related to BLCI student success and retention metrics
  • Manage all student files to be up to date, complete, and actively tracked for analysis and reporting
  • Identify gaps, issues, and opportunities that speak to student needs
  • Enter, maintain, report, review, analyze, and leverage data for continual improvement.
  • Track and report on internal metrics and benchmarks
  • Manage all required data collection for third party and external entity reporting requirements
  • Comply with data collection for grant reporting process for any third-party sponsored portions of programming

Other Duties

  • Collaborate with external partners to identify best practices and build partnerships for new opportunities.
  • Attend and actively participate in program specific huddles. Share best practices, collaborate with other site Specialists on projects/activities and assess program data to make programmatic decisions.
  • Assist colleagues and management with fundraising, resource development, public relations, and other functions as needed to support organizational goals.
  • Represent BLCI and the communities positively in all settings, embodying the mission and values of the organization.
  • Exemplify a strong commitment to BLCI's mission and values.
  • Participate in staff meetings, follow policies and procedures, maintain cleanliness and organization of shared facilities, and help with events and BLCI functions as needed.
  • Be a collaborative team player, willing to perform tasks beyond the scope of work as assigned, in order to meet the overall needs of the organization and leverage individual skill sets.

Education and Experience:

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in education, child development, or related field.
  • 2 years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience working with first-generation, low income, and/or underrepresented populations.
  • Bilingual: English and Spanish
  • Ability to work some weekends and late nights.
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
  • Must be able to drive, hold a valid California driver's license, use BLCI and personal vehicle and provide proof of insurance.
  • Successfully pass a background check.

Preferred

  • 3+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience with roles related to higher education access for traditionally underserved populations.
  • Knowledge or experience with curriculum development, standards, lesson planning and classroom management.
  • Build strong relationships and rapport with stakeholders, including students, staff, parents, leadership, Board members, donors, and the community.
