Education Support Professionals - ESP/Classified - Custodial Job Number 200####### Start Date Open Date 08/05/2025 Closing Date GROUNDSKEEPER IISUMMARY DESCRIPTION Under general supervision, performs maintenance and gardening work of moderate difficulty on District's grounds, athletic fields and outside facilities. May perform in a lead capacity or perform specialized gardening and landscaping duties such as irrigation or applying pesticides. Incumbent performs related work as required. May be assigned to any early morning, morning, day or evening shift. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The Groundskeeper II classification differs from the Groundskeeper I classification in that the former performs landscape work that is more specialized, technical and complex in nature and/or performs in a lead capacity directing a crew in the maintenance of District grounds and facilities. EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES Assigns and directs work of subordinate groundskeepers; inspects work in progress and completed work by District personnel and outside contractors to insure compliance with specifications and plans; assists in training employees; assists in directing major projects, such as returfing athletic fields, installing sprinkler systems, planting trees, or applying pest control spray and other chemicals; maintains work records and inventory records or supplies and equipment. Takes responsibility for and performs more complex, technical and skilled gardening and landscaping duties; plant, mows, trims, weeds, fertilizes and waters lawns, flower beds and fields; cuts and lays sod; trims shrubs, hedges and trees; sprays flowers and shrubs with insecticides; sweeps, hoses down and/or removes snow from walkways, drives, parking areas and bleachers; rakes or vacuums leaves; and does general ground cleaning by gathering trash and debris for burning or hauling away. Cleans and repairs or replaces sprinkler heads; installs or repairs sprinkler systems; repairs fences, resets fencepost and fastens wire; mixes cement and installs signs and posts; patches asphalt areas and installs parking bumpers; and paints traffic and parking marks on curbs, drives and parking lots. Assembles, installs, safety checks and repairs playground and athletic equipment; resurfaces and marks tracks and athletic fields for games and practices; and levels and repacks track areas. Performs minor carpentry or painting on signs, bleachers, press boxes and athletic equipment; lays cement for walkways, curbs and gutters; operates mowers, tractors, backhoes, graders, trucks and related equipment and machinery; loads and transports equipment and supplies; performs preventative maintenance and minor repairs on small engines. If assigned specialized pesticide and herbicide application duties: operates a variety of spray equipment both hand pump and power activated; prepares spray mix according to prescribed formulas; applies fungicides, herbicides, insecticides and rodenticides to control plant disease, noxious weeds, insects, animal pests; maintains work records and inventory records of supplies; prepares and maintains timely spray schedules; performs maintenance on spray equipment as needed; may supervise other employees in chemical application. May be called upon on off-hours for school emergencies, such as burglaries, vandalism, fires, snow removal, equipment failures, flooding, etc. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS Education/Experience: Any combination equivalent to education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
A high school diploma is desirable or equivalent education that would demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the class. AND
Two (2) to three (3) years of responsible gardening or grounds maintenance experience. Knowledge of: Integrated Pest Management strategies and laws, Safety and hazard precautions; irrigation systems; landscape design and gardening, pruning and landscaping methods and materials; small engine preventative maintenance and repair; and use and maintenance of gardening tools, machinery and equipment. If assigned specialized pesticide and herbicide application duties: weed identification, fungicides, insecticides, rodenticide, herbicides and pesticides and federal, state and local laws governing their application and disposal; use of various types of spray equipment; life cycles of common pests, insects, turf weeds, and turf diseases. Skill at: Working independently; understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions; communicating effectively in directing the work of others; performing heavy manual labor under adverse conditions; using gardening and land maintenance tools and equipment; reading, understanding and working from blueprints; and establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. If assigned specialized pesticide and herbicide application duties: safely using all chemicals; tree care and maintenance including tree pruning and spraying. Licenses/Certificates: Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid Nevada driver's license, with a driving record acceptable to the District. If assigned specialized pesticide and herbicide application duties: possession of a Nevada Restricted Use Pesticides Certificate. Certification: AHERA 16 Hour asbestos training, asbestos certification is required within the first 12 months of employment. Employer will provide training. Certification: OSHA Lead Action Training. Certification may be required within the first 12 months of employment. Employer will provide training. Physical Demands: This work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion, such as frequently climbing of tall ladders, lifting heavy objects over 60 pounds, pushing balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or reaching, crawling in restricted areas. . Must have the ability to enter all areas of a facility including attics and crawl spaces. To some extent, the frequency or intensity of physical exertion must also be considered. Special Considerations: At the following schools (Damonte Ranch HS, Reed HS, Shaw MS, Double Diamond ES, Spanish Springs HS, Depoali MS, Sky Ranch MS, Herz MS, Bohach ES, Sepulveda ES Hall ES and Poulakidas ES), reclaimed/effluent water is used, which requires that specific safety procedures be observed. Employees assigned to these facilities are required to remain current on the following vaccinations: Typhoid, Hepatitis A and Tetanus. New incumbents hired into this classification, who will work at any of these locations, are required to complete all vaccinations within 30 days of employment. When assigned at a new school under construction for the first school year, in addition to and along with the above, must possess the following: Knowledge of: Scheduling, receiving, unloading truckloads of product; translate and document information on packing slips, relaying information of received products and missing product to Capital Projects; organize and stage product.
