Location:

This role can be remote from anywhere in the US, but strong preference will be given to candidates located in Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, or Missouri.

Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Developer to spearhead the modernization of a legacy enterprise Java application. The current system is built on outdated technologies including Java 6/7, Struts, IBM WebSphere, SQL Server, and Windows Server. This role will lead the technical strategy and execution of migrating the application to modern platforms and frameworks, ensuring scalability, security, and maintainability.

Key Responsibilities:

• Serve as the technical lead for a cross-functional development team.
• Design and implement a migration strategy from legacy technologies to modern Java frameworks.
• Lead the refactoring of Struts-based components to newer MVC frameworks.
• Guide the database migration and optimization from SQL Server to a modern cloud-based solution.
• Ensure compatibility and performance on updated Windows Server environment.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to define technical requirements, timelines, and deliverables.
• Mentor junior developers and conduct code reviews to maintain high-quality standards.
• Implement CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices to streamline deployment and testing.
• Maintain documentation and provide regular updates to project leadership.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
• 8+ years of experience in Java development, with deep expertise in Java 8+.
• Proven experience with Struts, WebSphere, and SQL Server.
• Strong understanding of modern Java frameworks.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS).
• Familiarity with DevOps tools (Jenkins, Git, Maven, etc.).
• Excellent problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in application modernization or legacy system migration projects.
• Knowledge of security best practices and performance optimization.
• Certifications in Java, cloud technologies, or project management.
