Job Description Salary: Head of Structural Biology Helix BioStructures, LLC (HBS) is a contract research organization based in Indianapolis, Indiana, providing early drug discovery services to the biopharmaceutical industry. HBS offers a full suite of services including chemical & structural analysis, protein production, computational modeling, and design. Our core services are structural biology techniques such as X-ray Crystallography and Cryo-EM. Founded in 2018, we have experienced significant growth. We are seeking an experienced Head of Structural Biology to join our Indianapolis team. Main Responsibilities This role will lead, manage, and support the Helix team, overseeing project planning & tracking to ensure high-quality deliverables and client satisfaction. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in managing people and projects, with a deep understanding of protein construct design, expression, purification of challenging proteins, biophysical characterization, and structural biology techniques. Highly desirable skills and experience include: Protein Production Across Multiple Systems: Extensive experience with protein expression in bacteria, insect, mammalian, and yeast cell lines, including optimization of expression and purification strategies for diverse proteins. Biophysical Characterization: Proficiency in biochemical, biophysical, and structural characterization of proteins. Protein Crystallography: Experience in crystallizing proteins and nucleic acids, with a strong understanding of structure solution and refinement. Cryo-EM: Skilled in grid preparation, data collection, and processing, especially for complex projects. Leadership and Project Management: Ability to lead teams effectively, mentor staff, and ensure project success aligned with business goals. This role also involves providing experimental strategies to support client needs, requiring proficiency in protein production and structural biology. The successful candidate will lead multiple projects and guide the team, significantly impacting our service portfolios and business growth. Additional Responsibilities Create and manage documentation, communicate research priorities, progress, and results to clients and management. Provide project details, scientific guidance, and timelines to the team. Manage team members and support project bench work as needed. Ensure timely updates to clients regarding project statuses. Required Qualifications Ph.D. in biochemistry, biophysics, protein engineering, or structural biology. 3-7 years of industry experience post-Ph.D. (excluding academic postdocs). Experience in people and project management. Knowledge of construct design for structural/biophysical studies. Experience in protein expression and purification in bacterial, insect, mammalian, and yeast systems. Expertise in structural biology techniques, including X-ray Crystallography and Cryo-EM. Strong leadership, communication skills, and attention to detail. Location This position is based in Indianapolis, Indiana, with no hybrid option. Interaction with external vendors is expected. Physical Requirements Ability to lift 30 lbs objects. Ability to visualize microscopic objects under microscopes. Work Schedule, Travel, and Safety Adherence to safe lab practices with appropriate PPE. Flexibility to work occasionally outside regular hours for time-sensitive experiments.
