This is an open recruitment to establish an eligibility list to fill the current vacant positions for the 2025 - 2026 school year. The eligibility list will be used to fill any vacancies which may occur within a period of one year, or until depleted.

Current positions work 207 days per year at a school site; anticipated hours will be 2 - 3 hours per day, five days per week. The recruitment process will consist of a training and experience evaluation and a structured interview.

Basic function: Under the direction of an assigned administrator and/or Nutrition Services Lead, prepare and serve hot and cold food items at an assigned school site; maintain food service facilities, equipment and utensils in a clean and sanitary condition.

Essential Duties and Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Prepare and serve hot and cold food items at an assigned school site according to established guidelines, policies and procedures; assemble various ingredients; heat, package and wrap food items according to established portion control standards.

Set up food service area; prepare and set out prepared food and beverages for sale and distribution; distribute meals to students and staff; count and set-up plates, trays and utensils; stock condiments, food items, paper goods and other supplies as needed.

Maintain food service facilities, equipment and utensils in a clean and sanitary condition; clean food preparation and serving areas, counters, tables, storage areas and food service equipment; wash trays, pots, pans, plates, utensils and other serving equipment as assigned.

Perform cashiering duties as assigned; collect and count money and make correct change; prepare, balance and verify cash boxes; operate a point of sale (POS) terminal; maintain related records.

Prepare entrees, fruits, vegetables, sandwiches, salads, burritos, french fries, pretzels, cookies, hamburgers, pizza, pastries or other foods for distribution as assigned.

Observe quality and quantity of food served according to established procedures; assist in assuring food service activities comply with established health, safety and sanitary practices, standards and regulations; assist in assuring proper temperature of foods.

Prepare meals and food items for delivery to other school sites as assigned by the position; receive and unload food item deliveries; assist with the storage and rotation of food items and supplies in storage areas; assist with inventory activities; assist with ordering food supplies as required.

Load and unload shipments of food carts, items and supplies.

Operate standard food service equipment such as ovens, warmers, beverage machines and food carts; utilize a computer and assigned software as required.

Communicate with students and staff to exchange information.

Maintain various records related to food items, inventory, meal counts and assigned activities.

Other duties: Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of: Basic food preparation including heating and assembling food items and ingredients. Sanitation and safety practices related to preparing, handling and serving food. Standard kitchen equipment, utensils and measurements. Oral and written communication skills. Basic record-keeping techniques. Proper lifting techniques. Basic mathematic calculations.

Ability to: Prepare and serve hot and cold food items at an assigned school site. Maintain food service facilities, equipment and utensils in a clean and sanitary condition. Assemble, heat, package, wrap and prepare food items for distribution. Operate standard food service equipment safely and efficiently. Follow health and sanitation requirements. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Operate a computer and POS terminal. Work cooperatively with others. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Make basic math computations. Maintain routine records related to work performed.

Entrance Qualifications

Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.

Licenses and other requirements: Valid San Diego County Food Handler's Card.

Selection Process/Additional Information

Candidates who meet the minimum requirements, as demonstrated in their application materials, will be required to successfully complete a competitive testing process to measure the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the job, which may consist of a written examination, a training and experience evaluation, a performance examination, and/or structured oral interviews. The candidates achieving the top three ranks of the appropriate eligibility list will be referred for a final selection interview. The Eligibility List resulting from this examination may be used to fill vacancies in related job classifications for which no Eligibility List exists (Ed Code 45272).
