The Deputy Director/Building OfficialUnder administrative direction from the Planning and Building Department (PBD) Director, the Deputy Director will be responsible for the overall administration of the Building Bureau. This role includes delegation as Building Official, serving as the administrative interpreter of the Building Code as cited in Section 15 of the Oakland Municipal Code. The position plays a key role in permitting, inspection, code enforcement, environmental quality, and community character, contributing to policy development, process improvement, and metrics to meet the diverse needs of Oakland's residents, businesses, and institutions.
The Building Official influences quality of life in Oakland, given its history, diversity, architecture, transportation hubs, and economic opportunities. The Deputy Director will have opportunities to advise the Mayor, Council, and City administration on strategic and operational matters to enhance building and development experiences while ensuring structures are safe and welcoming during construction and over their lifespan.
Management is a core component of this role. The Building Official oversees over 50 staff members who collaborate with stakeholders across the Planning & Building Department, Oakland Fire Department, Department of Transportation, and Economic Workforce Development Department. Success requires a service-oriented approach, partnership, and effective management of performance metrics.
