The operating room Registered Nurse / Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) is a professional Perioperative Registered Nurse who gives direct and indirect specialized nursing care to patients in surgery. The RN / RNFA is the patient s advocate throughout the intraoperative experience and will be able to function in the circulating nurse role as well as RNFA. When in the role of Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA) he/she is under the supervision of the sponsoring or attending surgeon for the intraoperative experience. and has the responsibility for providing exposure and hemostasis as directed and supervised by the surgeon. . The RNFA also handles tissues, sutures and places drains as directed by the surgeon. The nursing process is used as a framework for these activities. Demonstrates the ability to interpret information to identify the patients age specific needs and provides appropriate care for the age group in question.
