Said individuals will also be responsible for entering, verifying and maintaining the Police Department's database for use by all departments. Information received must be evaluated and processed in a calm and professional manner in accordance with established protocols. This position may also be responsible for typing and transcribing police reports. The work also includes processing information by operation of computer terminals connected to the Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN), National Crime Information Center (NCIC), and local network computers.Employees are expected to exercise considerable judgment in performing routine communications processing under the direction of a supervisor. Employees may be required to wear a uniform and adhere to grooming standards. Employees must be able to speak with a clear modulated, pleasant voice and to use good grammatical construction in the choice of words. They must possess the ability to write legibly, using proper grammar and spelling, and to understand and follow moderately complex oral instruction. Additionally, employees are subject to callback during emergencies. Employees are expected to remain calm under heavy workloads and emergency situations.Typical Duties:Receives and records requests for police, fire, and medical services in non-emergency situations from citizens by telephone or in person.2. Prepares documents for input into the organization's database. Sorts, edits, classifies, corrects, and monitors records and reports to assure accuracy of input.3. Operates police radios and responds to requests from field units for information or services.4. Makes inquiries of various internal and external information services.5. Operates necessary office equipment such as a copier, dictation equipment, telephone, fax machine and computers etc.6. Operates a computer terminal connected to LEIN/NCIC or Mobile Data Computers.7. Maintains supplies used in Service Desk and Records areas.8. Leads/trains lower classified employees in related duties.9. Performs work of lower classified employees as required/assigned.10. Types and transcribes reports and records.11. Supplies requested information from documents maintained in the Records Section and/or retrieved from the database. Follows Department's disclosure guidelines regarding release of material.12. Records and dates all inputted documents upon entry into the database.13. Performs related clerical work (including police reports, processing gun registrations, and background checks).14. Coordinates the distribution of documents for filing by Records personnel.15. Fingerprints citizens and employees for non-criminal reasons both in ink and electronicallyPhysical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, use hands and fingers, talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, including small print, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to communicate by telephone, use limited mobility in an office setting, use manual dexterity to type and enter data, use sight to prepare documents and reports. The employee must be able to climb stairs to access the workplace. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.Eligibility Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent. Valid Michigan driver's license. Successful completion of the screening process, which includes: fingerprint check, written examination, oral board evaluation, intensive background investigation, physical examination, hearing test and drug screen. Willing to work any shift, weekends, and holidays. Excellent diction and ability to speak in a clear-cut and rapid fashion.
