Queens Botanical Garden is an urban oasis where people, plants, and cultures are celebrated through inspiring gardens, innovative educational programs, and demonstrations of environmental stewardship.

Queens Botanical Garden (QBG) is a private non-profit cultural institution located on 39 acres of New York City public land in Flushing, New York. In FY24, the Garden served approximately 282,000 visitors, including 22,000 schoolchildren. A recently completed visitor survey reveals that 45% of visitors speak a language other than English at home. This fact underscores the importance of the mission and the challenges and opportunities QBG faces daily in creating programs, exhibits, and landscapes that serve the needs of people who live in and visit one of the most ethnically diverse counties in the nation. The Garden has committed itself to addressing the complex and ever-changing needs of its diverse community and to being the place where people, plants, and cultures meet.

Queens Botanical Garden seeks a part-time temporary Farm Manager to support the QBG Farma one-acre farm that bridges sustainable agriculture, community, and education. The Farm invites the public to learn about the importance of urban agriculture and soil health. QBG is proud to have a closed-loop system where horticulture waste is processed into compost and used on the farm as organic fertilizer.

Responsibilities
  • Perform all labor necessary to maintain the farm per botanical garden standards
  • Experience with mowers, string trimmers, etc.
  • Maintain and harvest crops with support from volunteers and interns
  • Maintain orderly records of crops, purchases, and other farm-related data including tracking of budget
  • Maintain cleanliness and effectiveness of farm tools and machinery and keep an accurate inventory
  • Maintain farm structures and repair damaged structures on the farm
  • Maintain standard operating procedures for safe, efficient farm operations
  • Facilitate farm access to the public via farm open hours, tours, and farm stand
  • Lead farm workshops and conduct tours
  • Manage relationships and coordinate donations of produce to local food pantries
  • Oversee supervision of high school interns and work with other volunteer groups
Qualifications
  • Strong work ethic
  • Agricultural background
  • Strong farming skills and experience, including knowledge of organic farming practices
  • Experience with high-yield organic crop production and soil management
  • Plant identification skills
  • Knowledge of drip irrigation systems
  • Knowledge of Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred
  • Ability to move 50+ pounds
  • Availability on occasional weekends
Schedule

This is a part-time temporary position available immediately through October while the current Farm Manager is on leave. The position offers a minimum of 20 hours and up to 28 hours per week. A flexible weekday schedule may be arranged with the successful candidate, with occasional weekend work required.

Compensation

This position is hourly, $20/hr plus additional benefits.
