BENTON HARBOR AREA SCHOOLS Athletic Director JOB SUMMARY: The role of the Athletic Director is to manage, promote, organize, and direct a program of interscholastic athletics. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master's degree in athletic administration, education, or a related field
  • Valid Michigan School Administrator Certificate or willing to secure.
  • Two (2) years of experience as a building principal or administrator including an instructional leadership role
  • Two (2) years of classroom teaching experience
  • Administrative, budgeting, planning, and leadership skills
  • Ability to organize, interpret, and present conceptual models to users in a manner appropriate to users' skill sets and needs
  • Demonstrated independent critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills
  • Ability to successfully communicate at all levels of the organization
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with senior-level decision-makers
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with demonstrated experience giving presentations to a variety of audiences
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy, excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, coordinate, and simultaneously maintain multiple projects with a high level of quality and productivity
  • Demonstrated experience with tools used for evaluating, developing, and implementing ideas and concepts
  • Ability to think strategically and execute tactically and tactfully
  • Proficient computer skills in all Microsoft Office suites, as well as multiple platforms relevant to education, i.e. PowerSchool, Illuminate
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Proven ability to meet the challenges of an urban school district
  • Proven ability to meet the challenges of an urban, multi-racial, multi-ethnic school district.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ph.D or Ed.D. in Supervision and Instruction or related field.
  • Three (3) successful years of teaching experience
  • Three (3) years of experience as a building principal, including an instructional leadership role
JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop and maintain a program that emphasizes the safety, healthy life choices, and the welfare of the participants.
  • Strive to develop the concepts of discipline, hard work, desire to excel, and dedication to their chosen sports.
  • Hire and maintain a coaching staff that believes in the value of educational athletes. That is to promote athletics as a component of the educational process, where students learn valuable lessons in practice and competition that will shape their future.
  • Supervise an evaluation program for the coaches and set up training programs for coaches to be certified in CPR and First Aid, AED, Concussion, and MHSAA Coaches Advancement (CAP).
  • Encourage each head coach to develop a weight training program that will allow the athletes to experience the value of hard work in the weight room.
  • Pursue in-service and training programs that will improve the quality of the athletic program at (School District).
  • Responsible for scheduling all athletic contests.
  • Arrange transportation for all away contests.
  • Responsible for the supervision and administration of all home contests.
  • Responsible for the supervision of away varsity football and basketball games or arranging a contact person for the contest for appropriate supervision.
  • Contract with officials for home contests.
  • Evaluate all head coaches and delegate the evaluation of all assistant coaches.
  • Responsible for the budget, inventories, and purchases of all athletic equipment.
  • Responsible for all student athletic eligibility.
  • Responsible for all investigations of alleged violations of the athletic code by student-athletes.
  • Responsible for the enforcement of the Activities Code of Conduct, including the temporary and/or permanent suspensions of students who have violated policy.
  • Serve as a representative at league, regional, and state athletic director meetings.
  • Responsible for maintaining good public relations with the community and for utilizing fully the community resources to enrich the learning program
  • Works with boosters to facilitate purchases and support for the programs.
  • Responsible for all personnel adhering to the rules and regulations established by the Michigan High School Athletic Association
  • Continually appraise and evaluate the athletic program and submit a report annually to the High School Principal.
  • Maintain high academic standards and expectations
  • Represent the school district in a positive manner
  • Know and follow school district policy and chain of command
  • Regular and reliable attendance is an essential job duty
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Superintendent or designee.
  • Required to follow board policies; stay abreast of updates/changes.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: This is a 211-day contract position Salary based on education and experience pursuant to the Benton Harbor Area School Board policies and collective bargaining agreement for any position that falls under collective bargaining. EVALUATION: The performance of this job will be evaluated by the Director of Student Support Services and/or Superintendent FUNDING SOURCE: If this position is funded using Title dollars, federal regulations do not allow a promise of employment beyond the current year of allocated funds. If this position is funded using state program dollars, the district is not obligated to fund the position beyond the current year's allocation. This position, at any time, maybe dissolved based on funding availability and data collected from a comprehensive needs assessment.
