The Climate Jobs Institute is based in New York, NY, within the Cornell University ILR School located at 570 Lexington Ave. Position may be located in New York City, Buffalo, Ithaca, or other remote locations in New York State.

The School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University has immediate openings for TWO Climate Jobs Associates - Extension Associates in the Climate Jobs Institute in the Extension /Outreach Division, focusing on the intersection of labor, employment, climate justice, and climate change. These positions are responsible for developing and delivering programs and services aligned with the ILR School's strategic mission and core values, and for monitoring the quality, impact, and outcomes of education, training, technical assistance, consulting, and research activities.

Through policy research, partnerships, and innovative training programs, the Institute provides policymakers, labor and environmental movements, industry leaders, and others with the information needed to navigate this transition to a zero-carbon economy.

The Institute also serves as the academic and educational partner to the Climate Jobs National Resource Center, supporting unions across the U.S. with research, policy, and education.

What you will do:

The successful candidates will utilize research, policy, training, and education skills to support New York's and the nation's transition to a clean energy economy.

They will build relationships with labor unions and allies, study labor and employment impacts of clean energy, design pro-worker policies, and deliver training and educational programs to unions, policymakers, and environmental groups.

Specifically, the Extension Associate will:

  • Build trusting relationships with labor unions, environmental organizations, elected leaders, and allies.
  • Lead policy and technical research to develop jobs-centered, pro-union climate policies.
  • Organize and implement educational events, trips, trainings, and workshops based on research and partner needs.
  • Become experts in labor and employment impacts of various clean energy technologies.
  • Join a mission-driven team that values partnerships, impactful work, and a positive team environment.

This is a non-tenure track, academic term position for up to two years, ending June 30, 2026, with potential renewal based on funding and performance.

  • Master's or higher degree in related fields (industrial and labor relations, social sciences, labor economics, law, workforce development).
  • At least 2-5 years of experience with the labor movement or climate change issues.
  • Strong skills in communication, research, analysis, and policy development.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and supervise research assistants.
  • Commitment to inclusion, belonging, and team culture.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Over five years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with union organizing, policy, bargaining, leadership development.
  • Experience with union training programs and federated labor bodies.
  • Partnership experience with union leaders, legislators, and environmental groups.
  • Ability to organize large educational programs and conduct qualitative interviews.
  • Experience managing complex projects with large teams.

ILR offers a hybrid schedule opportunity. Visa sponsorship is not available.

Salary: $75,000 to $89,000, commensurate with experience and location.
