This position leads the Security Division within the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (OHSEM). The Campus Security Chief reports to the Director of OHSEM.

The duties listed are illustrative and not comprehensive of all tasks performed by this role.

Responsibilities include:
  • Leading and managing security operations
  • Developing and implementing policies, procedures, work orders, and rules
  • Establishing reporting and work routines for staff
  • Assessing security needs within County buildings and providing leadership to resolve issues
  • Analyzing problems, identifying solutions, projecting consequences, and implementing security strategies
  • Preparing staffing schedules
  • Conducting inspections of security officers' performance
  • Developing and presenting training and testing materials
  • Recommending hires and promotions, and evaluating employment decisions
  • Reviewing security incident reports
  • Conducting campus investigations and taking appropriate action
  • Assisting departments with internal investigations
  • Recommending program and equipment needs
  • Negotiating and administering security-related contracts
  • Managing County-wide access control and video recording systems
  • Preparing estimates and reports
  • Operating and maintaining security systems
  • Managing keys, badges, and access cards
  • Maintaining security operation supplies and equipment
  • Coordinating security for events and requests
  • Developing Incident Action Plans
  • Serving on the Emergency Operations Team as needed
  • Preparing administrative reports, proposals, budgets, and work plans
  • Maintaining confidentiality of documents and information
  • Building relationships with law enforcement and sharing information
  • Collaborating with public safety stakeholders
  • Non-essential duties include:

    • Adjusting work during emergencies and maintaining relevant training and certifications
    • Performing other duties as assigned
    Supervisory Responsibilities:

    Supervises personnel within the area of responsibility.

    Requirements:
    • Associate's degree in Criminal Justice, Sociology, Psychology, Security Management, or related fields
    • Eight years of security, law enforcement, or military experience in a multi-functional environment
    • Five years of supervisory experience in similar settings
    Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:
    • Valid Illinois Driver's License and Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) card required at hire and maintained throughout employment

    Pre-employment background check and writing exercise required.

    Physical Requirements:

    Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force frequently or constantly, including lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects or persons.

    Work Environment:

    Frequent work in extreme outdoor weather conditions.
