Job Description:

Opportunity Awaits, Apply Today! The Oregon State Hospital currently has multiple openings for our 10-month, accredited Interfaith Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Residency Program.

If you are a Religious or Spiritual Leader seeking to enhance your ability to minister to others in multicultural, interfaith/interreligious ways, our program is designed to do just that. This unique opportunity runs from October 2025 to August 2026 (exact dates to be determined) and successful applicants will receive salary and benefits. This is a limited-duration program. The Oregon State Hospital does not charge tuition for units of CPE and the cost for any educational supplies will be less than $100/unit.

What is CPE?

Clinical Pastoral Education is interfaith/interreligious professional education for ministry and requires students to be willing to provide or learn to provide patient-centered support that fully respects, honors, and supports a client' s religious/spiritual/cultural needs. It brings theological students and ministers of all religious/spiritual/humanist traditions (pastors, priests, rabbis, imams and others) into supervised encounter with persons in crisis. Out of an intense involvement with persons in need, as well as the feedback from peers and teachers, students develop new awareness of themselves and the people to they serve. From theological/philosophical reflection on specific human situations, students gain a new understanding of ministry. Within the interdisciplinary team process of helping persons, they develop skills in interpersonal and interprofessional relationships.

If you fulfill the most current educational requirements of ACPE, Inc., you will earn three units of CPE through ACPE, Inc., The Standard for Spiritual Care & Education, which is nationally recognized as an accrediting agency in the field of clinical pastoral education by the U.S. Department of Education. The OSH CPE program has been in existence since 1957, providing high-quality clinical education in spiritual care over the decades

What you will do!

Duties & Responsibilities:

As a Clinical Pastoral Education Resident (limited duration employee) at the Oregon State Hospital, you will provide spiritual care to clients, visitors, and staff; lead spiritual care Treatment Mall groups in an interdisciplinary setting; and collaborate in offering diverse religious/spiritual services. You will also conduct spiritual assessments and interventions at our Salem campus and/or, potentially, our Junction City campus. You also participate in a 10-month ACPE accredited program with other residents/students to enhance your spiritual and professional development.

What we are looking for:

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree;
• a graduate from an accredited seminary or theological school (professional/formal, full‑time, resident religious training of a similar nature will be considered as equivalent to seminary or theological school);
• possess current official endorsement/sponsorship from a recognized religious organization (e.g., an ordained religious leader)
• three years of full‑time experience as a religious leader (such as: minister, priest, teacher, rabbi, or imam) in a formal setting (such as a parish, synagogue, tribe, temple or mosque).

**Preference will be given to candidates who have previous clinical experience.

Desired Attributes:

We're seeking compassionate, reflective, and open-minded religious/spiritual leaders with at least a bachelor's degree (relevant master's preferred) and a unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (preferred, but not required). You must have previous pastoral care/spiritual care experience and/or comparable experience that demonstrates your ability to:

• Compassionately and empathically visit clients and their visitors/families (with client consent) throughout the hospital to lend spiritual and religious support as needed.
• Conduct spiritual assessments and consult with staff concerning patients' beliefs, practices, customs, or cultures that affect recovery.
• Provide care that is sensitive to and both supportive and respectful of all aspects of a patients' and coworkers' identity, including race, culture, gender identity, religion/spirituality, sexual orientation, immigration status, ability/(dis)ability, socioeconomic status, etc. in congruence with OSH values, mission, policies, and procedures.
• Articulate and advocate for the spiritual needs of patients to their care team and other chaplains/spiritual caregivers.

• Assist in providing memorial services and other religious/spiritual practices and special events, both to individual faith groups and interfaith groups.
• Work with other clinicians, staff, community clergy, and staff chaplains.
• Engage in the Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program with openness to feedback, personal reflexivity, and commitment to skill development and professional formation.
• Demonstrate sensitivity to diverse religious, spiritual, and cultural practices and values and be able to advocate for the client's rights and dignity, always honoring their religious, spiritual, and cultural perspective and practices.
