Our client is a privately held professional services firm with a team of both field and office-based employees spread across multiple locations. The company fosters a culture grounded in service, collaboration, and professionalism—favoring a more agile and people-focused approach over traditional corporate rigidity.

Our client is seeking a hands-on, people-focused Director of HR, Payroll & Benefits to oversee all aspects of human resources, enhance employee engagement, and modernize HR operations. This opportunity is ideal for someone who thrives in a boutique company environment, is comfortable managing a multi-office workforce, and can effectively balance the needs of both employees and leadership.

The right candidate will bring strong leadership and organizational capabilities, deep expertise in payroll and benefits administration, and a track record of designing and implementing impactful HR and training programs. This is a strategic, high-touch role suited to someone who enjoys building systems, improving culture, and taking ownership of HR infrastructure in a dynamic and evolving environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to ownership and employees on all HR matters
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and responsive workplace culture
  • Address challenges with tact and assertiveness to move the organization forward
  • Advocate for employee needs while maintaining alignment with business goals

Payroll & Benefits Administration

  • Oversee weekly and bi-monthly payroll cycles for exempt and non-exempt employees across multiple entities
  • Ensure accuracy and compliance
  • Manage benefits programs, including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k), and serve as the in-house expert on offerings
  • Coordinate open enrollment and educate employees on benefit options

Performance & Training

  • Lead performance evaluation cycles and partner with leadership on developmental feedback
  • Design and implement training programs for staff and management
  • Establish onboarding and continuous learning initiatives to improve retention and performance

HR Operations & Compliance

  • Maintain employee records and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws
  • Drive adoption of new HR tools and technologies to streamline operations
  • Produce regular reporting and workforce analytics using Excel and HRIS

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business, or a related field (required)
  • 7+ years of progressive HR experience, including leadership roles
  • Strong background in payroll, benefits, and HR compliance
  • Experience supporting a dispersed workforce across multiple office locations
  • Prior success in a smaller company or entrepreneurial setting
  • Proficient in HRIS software and Excel (pivot tables); experience implementing new tools and systems is a plus
  • Able to communicate clearly and diplomatically across levels of the organization
  • Flexible, approachable, and professional without being overly corporate or process-heavy

Base Salary: $130k-$150k plus bonus, 401k (with match) and additional benefits/perks.
